Efficacy of Liposomal Bupivacaine in Reducing Opioid Use After Posterior Lumbar Spinal Decompression and Fusion
CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggest that the addition of liposomal bupivacaine to traditional pain management modalities can augment pain management for patients undergoing posterior lumbar surgery, as evidenced by the significant decrease in postoperative morphine milligram equivalents required. Receipt of prescription opioid medication is associated with increased mortality in an Israeli population
ConclusionIncreased opioid use is independently associated with increased all-cause mortality among non-oncological patients. This result is most notable among young adults with little or no known comorbidities. These findings are consistent with results in other countries and seem more credible than previous Israeli reports. Healthcare regulators and providers should, therefore, act to curtail the increasing opioid prescriptions and devise and enhance controls in the healthcare system, which, until 2020, had very limited mechanisms in place. Is a Rapid Recovery Protocol for THA and TKA Associated With Decreased 90-day Complications, Opioid Use, and Readmissions in a Health Safety-net Hospital?
CONCLUSION: Surgeons should consider developing an RRP in health safety-net hospitals. Such protocols emphasize preparing patients for surgery and supporting them through the acute recovery phase. There are possible benefits of neuraxial and nonopioid perioperative anesthesia, with emphasis on early mobility, which should be further characterized in comparative studies. Continued analysis of opioid use trends after discharge would be a future area of interest. Analysis of RRPs with expanded inclusion criteria should be undertaken to better understand the role of these protocols in patients who undergo revision TKA and THA....

Predictors of persistent opioid use in bladder cancer patients undergoing radical cystectomy: A SEER-Medicare analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Non-opioid naïve patients have higher rates of post-operative opioid prescription than opioid-naïve patients. Physician prescribing practices play a role in persistent use, as initial prescription amount predicts persistent use even in non-opioid naïve patients. Significant physician variation in both prescribing practices and rates of persistent use suggest a role for standardizing practices.PMID:38565428 | DOI:10.1016/j.urolonc.2024.03.010 (Source: Urologic Oncology)

Evaluation of the antinociceptive activities of natural propolis extract derived from stingless bee < em > Trigona thoracica < /em > in mice
CONCLUSIONS: : APE from Trigona thoracica, containing p-coumaric acid and caffeic acid, exhibited antinociceptive effects, which supports its potential use in targeting the prevention or reversal of central and peripheral sensitization that may produce clinical pain conditions.PMID:38557655 | DOI:10.3344/kjp.23318 (Source: Korean Journal of Pain)

Storage, Disposal, and Use of Opioids Among Cancer Patients in Central China: A Multi-Center Cross-Sectional Study
CONCLUSION: A significant proportion of Chinese patients with cancer exhibit unsafe practices in the storage, disposal, and use of opioids. The study highlights an urgent need for implementing routine education programs and drug "take-back" initiatives to improve opioid-related practices.PMID:38557816 | DOI:10.1093/oncolo/oyae049 (Source: The Oncologist)
