Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack
Prim Care. 2024 Jun;51(2):283-297. doi: 10.1016/j.pop.2024.02.004. Epub 2024 Apr 1.ABSTRACTCerebrovascular disease is a common and potentially life-threatening illness if not triaged and/or treated appropriately. The diagnosis is made based on a combination of clinical history and neuroimaging studies. The majority of strokes can be prevented, and this process often begins in the primary care office through the careful assessment of vascular risk factors. Appropriate workup aims to pinpoint a pathogenic mechanism and guide therapy. Stroke treatment has rapidly advanced over the past several years, resulting in improved out...

Edaravone dexborneol regulates γ-aminobutyric acid transaminase in rats with acute intracerebral hemorrhage
Edaravone dexborneol is neuroprotective against ischemic stroke, with free radical-scavenging and anti-inflammatory effects, but its effects in hemorrhagic stroke remain unclear. We evaluated whether edaravone dexborneol has a neuroprotective effect in intracerebral hemorrhage, and its underlying mechanisms. (Source: Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases)

Robust Ensemble of Two Different Multimodal Approaches to Segment 3D Ischemic Stroke Segmentation Using Brain Tumor Representation Among Multiple Center Datasets
AbstractIschemic stroke segmentation at an acute stage is vital in assessing the severity of patients ’ impairment and guiding therapeutic decision-making for reperfusion. Although many deep learning studies have shown attractive performance in medical segmentation, it is difficult to use these models trained on public data with private hospitals’ datasets. Here, we demonstrate an ensemble model that employs two different multimodal approaches for generalization, a more effective way to perform on external datasets. First, after we jointly train a segmentation model on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and apparent diff...

Messenger RNAs in the Whole Blood of Male and Females after Acute Ischemic Stroke using Bioinformatics
CONCLUSIONS: This study identified gender-specific mRNA expression differences in the peripheral whole blood of AIS patients. The findings provide important insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying AIS in males and females.PMID:38687860 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Dorsal dentate gyrus mediated enriched environment-induced anxiolytic and antidepressant effects in cortical infarcted mice
This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of EE on emotional disorders after cerebral ischemia and its underling mechanism. In this study, sensorimotor cortical infarction was induced by photothrombosis with stable infarct location and volume, resulting in motor dysfunction, anxiety and depression-like behaviors in mice, with decreased ALFF and ReHo values and decreased c-fos expression in the infarction area and adjacent regions. Seven days' EE treatment significantly improved motor function of contralateral forelimb and exhibited anxiolytic and antidepressant effects in infarcted mice. Compared to the mice housing in...

Atrial Septal Abnormalities and Cryptogenic Stroke: A Cross-Sectional Study
CONCLUSION: Based on our results, the prevalence of atrial septal abnormalities was relatively high. Considering these issues and the importance of preventing neurological accidents in patients, especially young people, it is recommended to always consider atrial septal disorders and, if diagnosed, to carry out the necessary treatment in this field.PMID:38685781 | DOI:10.2174/011871529X294809240415070950 (Source: Cardiovascular and Hematological Disorders Drug Targets)

Automatic assessment of DWI-ASPECTS for acute ischemic stroke based on deep learning
CONCLUSIONS: This study proposed an automated model for ASPECTS scoring of patients with acute ischemic stroke based on DWI images. Experimental results show that the method of segmentation first and then classification is feasible. Our method has the potential to assist physicians in the Alberta Stroke Program with early CT scoring and clinical stroke diagnosis.PMID:38687043 | DOI:10.1002/mp.17101 (Source: Health Physics)

Targeting pyroptosis to treat ischemic stroke: From molecular pathways to treatment strategy
Int Immunopharmacol. 2024 Apr 29;133:112168. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2024.112168. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIschemic stroke is the primary reason for human disability and death, but the available treatment options are limited. Hence, it is imperative to explore novel and efficient therapies. In recent years, pyroptosis (a pro-inflammatory cell death characterized by inflammation) has emerged as an important pathological mechanism in ischemic stroke that can cause cell death through plasma membrane rupture and release of inflammatory cytokines. Pyroptosis is closely associated with inflammation, which exacerbates the infl...
