Protein-losing enteropathy: is it Crohn's disease?
Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.17235/reed.2024.10461/2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCase of a 24-year-old woman presenting due to edema in lower extremities. The patient had had infectious mononucleosis three weeks prior and had medical history of suspicion of Crohn's disease (CD) (due to a non-specific ileocolitis in a colonoscopy/EnteroRM). No ongoing medication. Laboratory evaluation unveiled hypoproteinemia with severe hypoalbuminemia, no renal abnormalities. A PLE was assumed, with post-infectious or CD being the most likely culprits. Alternative causes were extensively excluded. A videocapsule revealed...

Sacroiliitis in inflammatory bowel disease on abdominal computed tomography: prevalence, misses, and associated factors
CONCLUSION: Physicians should carefully evaluate SI joints on abdominal CT in patients with IBD to enable early detection of sacroiliitis, potentially leading to an early diagnosis of axSpA. In addition, if patients with IBD present with back pain, the possibility of sacroiliitis should be considered.PMID:38686835 | DOI:10.1080/03009742.2024.2337453 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology)

TLR7-dependent eosinophil degranulation links psoriatic skin inflammation to small intestinal inflammatory changes in mice
Exp Mol Med. 2024 May 1. doi: 10.1038/s12276-024-01225-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecent evidence of gut microbiota dysbiosis in the context of psoriasis and the increased cooccurrence of inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis suggest a close relationship between skin and gut immune responses. Using a mouse model of psoriasis induced by the Toll-like receptor (TLR) 7 ligand imiquimod, we found that psoriatic dermatitis was accompanied by inflammatory changes in the small intestine associated with eosinophil degranulation, which impaired intestinal barrier integrity. Inflammatory responses in the skin and small inte...

Combination treatment of inflammatory bowel disease: Present status and future perspectives
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 21;30(15):2068-2080. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i15.2068.ABSTRACTThe treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), especially those with severe or refractory disease, represents an important challenge for the clinical gastroenterologist. It seems to be no exaggeration to say that in these patients, not only the scientific background of the gastroenterologist is tested, but also the abundance of "gifts" that he should possess (insight, intuition, determination, ability to take initiative, etc.) for the successful outcome of the treatment. In daily clinical practice, depending on the ...

Topic highlight on texture and color enhancement imaging in gastrointestinal diseases
In conclusion, TXI can improve gastrointestinal lesion detection and qualitative diagnosis. Therefore, further studies on the efficacy of TXI in clinical practice are required.PMID:38681121 | PMC:PMC11045492 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i14.1934 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology)

Acute interstitial nephritis in patients with inflammatory bowel disease treated with vedolizumab: a systematic review
CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that vedolizumab, although rarely, could cause AIN in patients with IBD. Awareness of laboratory findings and symptoms consistent with AIN, along with monitoring of the kidney function, could be warranted in patients with IBD treated with vedolizumab.PMID:38682791 | DOI:10.1080/00365521.2024.2345383 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology)

Dissecting the Mechanisms of Intestinal Immune Homeostasis by Analyzing T-Cell Immune Response in Crohn's Disease and Colorectal Cancer
CONCLUSION: Finally, the analysis of regulon networks revealed several promising candidates for cell-specific transcription factors (TFs). This study focused on the immune molecular mechanism under intestinal diseases. It contributed to the novel insight of depicting a detailed immune landscape and revealing T-cell responding mechanisms in CD and CRC.PMID:38682449 | DOI:10.2174/0115665232294568240201073417 (Source: Current Gene Therapy)

Probiotics: Shaping the gut immunological responses
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 21;30(15):2096-2108. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i15.2096.ABSTRACTProbiotics are live microorganisms exerting beneficial effects on the host's health when administered in adequate amounts. Among the most popular and adequately studied probiotics are bacteria from the families Lactobacillaceae, Bifidobacteriaceae and yeasts. Most of them have been shown, both in vitro and in vivo studies of intestinal inflammation models, to provide favorable results by means of improving the gut microbiota composition, promoting the wound healing process and shaping the immunological responses. Chronic intestinal c...

Understanding autoimmune pancreatitis: Clinical features, management challenges, and association with malignancies
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 21;30(15):2091-2095. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i15.2091.ABSTRACTIn this editorial we comment on the article by Jaber et al. Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) represents a distinct form of pancreatitis, categorized into AIP-1 and AIP-2, characterized by obstructive jaundice, lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate, and fibrosis. AIP-1, associated with elevated immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) levels, exhibits higher relapse rates, affecting older males, while AIP-2 is less common and linked to inflammatory bowel disease. AIP is considered a manifestation of IgG4-related systemic disease, sharing characteristic histologi...
