Bear Bile Powder Improves Ulcerative Colitis by Protecting the Intestinal Mechanical Barrier and Regulating Intestinal Flora
CONCLUSION: Oral administration of a certain dose of BBP can significantly improve the symptoms of ulcerative colitis in mice. Part of the reason may be that it increases the expression of tight junction proteins, regulates specific flora in the intestine of mice, and maintains intestinal barrier homeostasis. In the future, the clinical application value of BBP will be explored, and BBP will be developed as a drug with the potential to treat UC and alleviate the pain of UC patients.PMID:38676524 | DOI:10.2174/0113816128294893240403074953 (Source: Current Pharmaceutical Design)

Peripheral inflammation triggering central anxiety through the hippocampal glutamate metabolized receptor 1
CONCLUSION: Our work suggests that the hippocampus plays an important role in brain anxiety caused by peripheral inflammation, and over-excitation of hippocampal glutamate synapses by GRM1 activation induces anxiety-like behavior in colitis mice. These findings provide new insights into the central mechanisms underlying anxiety in UC and may contribute to the development of novel therapeutic strategies for UC-associated anxiety.PMID:38676295 | PMC:PMC11053250 | DOI:10.1111/cns.14723 (Source: CNS Neuroscience and Therapeutics)

Surgical Emergencies in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Surg Clin North Am. 2024 Jun;104(3):685-699. doi: 10.1016/j.suc.2023.11.012. Epub 2023 Dec 14.ABSTRACTInflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients are at risk for undergoing emergency surgery for fulminant disease, toxic megacolon, bowel perforation, intestinal obstruction, or uncontrolled gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Unfortunately, medical advancements have failed to significantly decrease rates of emergency surgery for IBD. It is therefore important for all acute care and colorectal surgeons to understand the unique considerations owed to this often-challenging patient population.PMID:38677830 | DOI:10.1016/j.suc.2023.11.01...

Colorectal Neoplasia in the Setting of Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Surg Clin North Am. 2024 Jun;104(3):673-684. doi: 10.1016/j.suc.2023.12.006. Epub 2023 Dec 26.ABSTRACTInflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer (colorectal adenocarcinoma [CRC]) compared with the general population. IBD-related CRC is related to poorer outcomes than non-IBD-related CRC, and it accounts for 10% to 15% of death in patients with IBD. As such, screening guidelines have been made specific to this population recommending shorter intervals of endoscopic screening to detect dysplasia and CRC relative to the general population. Advances in endoscopic technology allow...

The Modulatory Effects of Curcumin on the Gut Microbiota: A Potential Strategy for Disease Treatment and Health Promotion
Microorganisms. 2024 Mar 23;12(4):642. doi: 10.3390/microorganisms12040642.ABSTRACTCurcumin (CUR) is a lipophilic natural polyphenol that can be isolated from the rhizome of turmeric. Studies have proposed that CUR possesses a variety of biological activities. Due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, CUR shows promise in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, while its anti-obesity effects make it a potential therapeutic agent in the management of obesity. In addition, curcumin's ability to prevent atherosclerosis and its cardiovascular benefits further expand its potential application in the treatmen...

Very-early-onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease in an Infant with a Partial RIPK1 Deletion
AbstractThe monogenic causes of very-early-onset inflammatory bowel disease (VEO-IBD) have been defined by genetic studies, which were usually related to primary immunodeficiencies. Receptor-interacting serine/threonine-protein kinase-1 (RIPK1) protein is an important signalling molecule in inflammation and cell death pathways. Its deficiency may lead to various clinical features linked to immunodeficiency and/or inflammation, including IBD. Here, we discuss an infant with malnutrition, VEO-IBD, recurrent infections and polyathritis who has a homozygous partial deletion inRIPK1 gene. (Source: Journal of Clinical Immunology)

Challenges in Defining a Reference Set of Differentially Expressed lncRNAs in Ulcerative Colitis by Meta-Analysis
Curr Issues Mol Biol. 2024 Apr 5;46(4):3164-3174. doi: 10.3390/cimb46040198.ABSTRACTThe study aimed to identify common differentially expressed lncRNAs from manually curated ulcerative colitis (UC) gene expression omnibus (GEO) datasets. Nine UC transcriptomic datasets of clearly annotated human colonic biopsies were included in the study. The datasets were manually curated to select active UC samples and controls. R packages geneknitR, gprofiler, clusterProfiler were used for gene symbol annotation. The R EdgeR package was used to analyze differential expression. This resulted in a total of nineteen lncRNAs that were diff...

C-reactive Protein: An Inflammatory Biomarker and a Predictor of Neurodegenerative Disease in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
Cureus. 2024 Apr 25;16(4):e59009. doi: 10.7759/cureus.59009. eCollection 2024 Apr.ABSTRACTInflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to two chronic conditions of the digestive tract: ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), representing a progressive inflammatory process that mainly occurs in the gut, with frequent extra-intestinal manifestations. Even if remission is periodically obtained for some patients, the histological activity and digestive symptoms may continue, maintaining a persistent systemic inflammation that could induce further extra-intestinal complications and contribute to the development of neurodeg...

Sclareol protected against intestinal barrier dysfunction ameliorating Crohn's disease-like colitis via Nrf2/NF-B/MLCK signalling
CONCLUSIONS: SCL improved intestinal barrier dysfunction and alleviated CD-like colitis, possibly through modulation of Nrf2/NF-κB/MLCK signalling. In view of SCL's safety profile, there is hope that it will be useful in the clinic.PMID:38669952 | DOI:10.1016/j.intimp.2024.112140 (Source: International Immunopharmacology)
