Two Symptom Clusters Identified in Patients with Acute Heart Failure
According to this study: Two distinct symptom clusters were identified in patients with acute heart failure: one with severe congestion and the other with mild congestion.Identification of these symptom clusters in the ED could help with symptom management, patient triage, diagnosis, and self-care at home.PMID:38661705 | DOI:10.1097/01.NAJ.0001016392.13580.5b (Source: The American Journal of Nursing)

Growth differentiation factor-15 serum concentrations reflect disease severity and anemia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
CONCLUSION: For the first time, we demonstrated that serum concentrations of GDF-15 are elevated in patients with IBD in comparison to healthy controls, and the results imply that GDF-15 might be involved in IBD pathophysiology. Yet, it remains elusive whether GDF-15 could serve as a prognostic indicator in these patients.PMID:38659482 | PMC:PMC11036493 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1899 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)

Comparison of Incidence and Prognostic Impact of Ischemic Major Bleeding and Heart Failure Events in Patients With Chronic Coronary Syndrome: Insights From the CORONOR Registry
CONCLUSIONS: Hospitalization for HF has become both the most frequent and one of the most ominous events among patients with chronic coronary syndrome. Although less frequent, major bleeding is strongly associated with worse patient survival. Secondary prevention should not be limited to preventing ischemic events. Minimizing bleeding and preventing HF may be at least as important.PMID:38660793 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.123.067938 (Source: Circulation)

The Tricuspid Valve: A Review of Pathology, Imaging, and Current Treatment Options: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association
Circulation. 2024 Apr 25. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001232. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTricuspid valve disease is an often underrecognized clinical problem that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, patients will often present late in their disease course with severe right-sided heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and life-limiting symptoms that have few durable treatment options. Traditionally, the only treatment for tricuspid valve disease has been medical therapy or surgery; however, there have been increasing interest and success with the use of transcatheter tricuspid valve ther...

Wnt Signaling Inhibition Prevents Postnatal Inflammation and Disease Progression in Mouse Congenital Myxomatous Valve Disease
CONCLUSIONS: Wnt signaling is involved in the initiation of mitral valve abnormalities and inflammation but is not responsible for later-stage valve disease progression once it has been initiated. Thus, Wnt signaling contributes to MVD progression in a time-dependent manner and provides a promising therapeutic target for the early treatment of congenital MVD in Marfan syndrome.PMID:38660802 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.123.320388 (Source: Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology)

Heart failure: the grim reaper of the cardio ‐renal‐metabolic triad
ConclusionsIn a cohort of CKD patients, having HF contributes substantially to increased mortality and the risk of MACE, and these patients are less likely to start KRT. These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted therapeutic strategies and management plans for CKD patients, particularly those with concurrent HF, to enhance patient prognosis. Cardiac sympathetic nerve activity trends after renal denervation in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction
AbstractThis case report describes the application of ultrasound renal denervation (uRDN) using the Paradise System in a patient with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Initially, the cardiac sympathetic nerve activity of the patient exhibited a late heart/mediastinum (H/M) ratio of 2.00 and a washout rate of 66.0% by cardiac iodine-123 metaiodobenzylguanidine (123I-MIBG) scintigraphy. Subsequently, the patient underwent transfemoral uRDN targeting the left, right upper, and right lower renal arteries. At the 6  month follow-up, no significant change was observed in123I-MIBG findings; however, the estimated s...

A young patient with Graves' disease presenting with a triad of heart failure, pancytopenia, and jaundice: A case report
We describe a case of a young man who presented with progressive cough, increased abdominal girth and ankle swelling for a few months. On examination, he had jaundice, bilateral exophthalmos, diffuse goiter, ascites, and significant lower limb edema. Laboratory investigations showed increased Thyroxin level with a suppressed thyroid stimulating hormone and positive anti-thyrotropin receptor antibodies. Also, the patient had pancytopenia, coagulopathy and cholestatic pattern of elevated liver enzymes. Echocardiography demonstrated mildly reduced left ventricular function with diastolic dysfunction, but electrocardiogram did...

Percutaneous intravascular micro-axial blood pump: current state and perspective from engineering view
AbstractThe utilization of a minimally invasively placed catheter-mounted intravascular micro-axial flow blood pump (IMFBP) is increasing in the population with advanced heart failure. The current development of IMFBPs dates back around the 1990s, namely the Hemopump with a wire-drive system and the Valvopump with a direct-drive system. The wire-drive IMFBPs can use a brushless motor in an external console unit to transmit rotational force through the drive wire rotating the impeller inside the body. The direct-drive IMFBPs require an ultra-miniature and high-power brushless motor. Additionally, the direct-drive system nec...

Birth cohort effect in atrial fibrillation: a matter of detection?
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac rhythm disorder, affecting an estimated 43 million people globally.1 In the last 20 years, the incidence of AF increased by 33% and it is expected to increase by threefold in the next three decades.1 Long-term AF management, including outpatient visits, hospitalisations and disabilities from stroke and heart failure (HF), adds substantial burden on healthcare resources and costs, accounting for 2.6% of the total annual healthcare expenditure of European countries.2 As a result, AF has emerged as a major public health concern and a potential future epidemic.1 The...
