Morphological and microsatellite DNA diversity of Djallonk é sheep in Guinea-Bissau
The present study aimed at characterizing the Djallonk é Sheep (DS), the only local sheep breed raised in Guinea-Bissau. A total of 200 animals were sampled from four regions (Bafatá, Gabú, Oio and Cacheu) and ... (Source: BMC Genetics)

Maternal BCG primes for enhanced health benefits in the newborn
The early-life mortality remains high in developing countries and nearly half of under-5 deaths occur in the neonatal period.1 Neonatal sepsis caused by a range of different bacterial agents, against which specific vaccines are not available, is a leading cause of death.2 A strategy to reduce early-life infection severity is the at-birth provision of live vaccines such as Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) and Bacille Calmette-Gu érin (BCG).3 In a series of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) conducted by the Bandim Health Project (BHP, www.bandim.org) in Guinea-Bissau, BCG provided at hospital discharge a few days after birth redu...

IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 11296: Major Stressors Favoring Cholera Trigger and Dissemination in Guinea-Bissau (West Africa)
In this study, a 27-year retrospective analysis of cholera epidemics in Guinea-Bissau was performed in order to highlight major stressors fueling the trigger and dissemination of the disease. Although the role of environmental factors did not always have the same degree of importance for the onset of epidemics, a cholera seasonal pattern was clearly perceived, with most of the reported cases occurring during the wet season. The generated theoretical hypothesis indicated rainfall above climatological average, associated with a lack of WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) infrastructure, and the occurrence of concomitant epi...

Coverage and factors associated with receiving campaign polio vaccines in an urban population in Guinea-Bissau
CONCLUSIONS: To increase campaign coverage in urban Guinea-Bissau attention may be directed at informing young mothers, mothers of young children, mothers without formal education, and the Fula ethnic group about campaigns.PMID:34654578 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2021.08.090 (Source: Vaccine)

Leprosy in wild chimpanzees
Nature, Published online: 13 October 2021; doi:10.1038/s41586-021-03968-4Monitoring of western chimpanzee populations in Guinea-Bissau and Côte d’Ivoire reveals the presence of rare and different genotypes of Mycobacterium leprae, suggesting greater circulation in wild animals than previously thought. Inverted CD8 T-Cell Exhaustion and Co-Stimulation Marker Balance Differentiate Aviremic HIV-2-Infected From Seronegative Individuals
HIV-2 is less pathogenic compared to HIV-1. Still, disease progression may develop in aviremic HIV-2 infection, but the driving forces and mechanisms behind such development are unclear. Here, we aimed to reveal the immunophenotypic pattern associated with CD8 T-cell pathology in HIV-2 infection, in relation to viremia and markers of disease progression. The relationships between pathological differences of the CD8 T-cell memory population and viremia were analyzed in blood samples obtained from an occupational cohort in Guinea-Bissau, including HIV-2 viremic and aviremic individuals. For comparison, samples from HIV-1- or...

Prevalence of diarrhoeal pathogens among children under five years of age with and without diarrhoea in Guinea-Bissau
by Sointu Mero, Suvi Timonen, Tinja L ääveri, Sandra Løfberg, Juha Kirveskari, Johan Ursing, Lars Rombo, Poul-Erik Kofoed, Anu Kantele BackgroundChildhood diarrhoea, a major cause of morbidity and mortality in low-income regions, remains scarcely studied in many countries, such as Guinea-Bissau. Stool sample drying enables later qPCR analyses of pathogens without concern about electricity shortages. MethodsDried stool samples of children under five years treated at the Bandim Health Centre in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau were screened by qPCR for nine enteric bacteria, five viruses, and four parasites. The findings of children...

Life expectancy of HIV-infected patients followed at the largest hospital in Guinea-Bissau is one-fourth of life expectancy of the background population
ConclusionsLE was shown to be markedly lower among HIV-infected patients compared with the background population. While other settings have shown marked improvements in prognosis of HIV-infected patients in recent years, no improvement in Bissau was observed over time (9.8  years (95% CI 7.6–12.2) and 9.9 years (95% CI 7.6–12.1) for the periods 2005–2010 and 2014–2016, respectively). Revisiting COVID-19 Communication in Western Africa: A Health Literacy-based Approach to Health Communication
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2021 Jul 19:tpmd210013. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.21-0013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAdherence to protective measures is a major component of COVID-19 epidemic control. COVID-19 health literacy is a major driver of this adherence, and the evaluation of health literacy levels is the basis for designing an effective communication strategy. We conducted a quantitative socio-anthropological study of the knowledge of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and perception of the prevention messages in Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, and Sierra Leone. There ...
