Revisiting COVID-19 Communication in Western Africa: A Health Literacy-based Approach to Health Communication
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2021 Jul 19:tpmd210013. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.21-0013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAdherence to protective measures is a major component of COVID-19 epidemic control. COVID-19 health literacy is a major driver of this adherence, and the evaluation of health literacy levels is the basis for designing an effective communication strategy. We conducted a quantitative socio-anthropological study of the knowledge of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and perception of the prevention messages in Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, and Sierra Leone. Elemental composition of whole body soft tissues in bivalves from the Bijag ós Archipelago, Guinea-Bissau
Environ Pollut. 2021 Jul 2;288:117705. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2021.117705. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMarine bivalves are bioindicators of coastal environmental pollution, integrating monitoring programs worldwide. Nonetheless, the choice of particular species as an indicator requires validation, achieved by understanding the differences in element concentrations among and within species. The present study compares the chemical composition of whole body soft tissues of four common bivalve species from the Bijagós Archipelago, a pristine region of West Africa. Significant differences were recorded in the concentrations o...

Neonatal Bacille Calmette-Gu érin vaccination and tuberculin skin test reactions at 2- and 6-months: Effects on mortality up to 1 year of age
CONCLUSION: Among BCG-vaccinated infants, TST reactions were associated with markedly reduced mortality. Improved vaccination technique and using certain BCG strains could lead to a higher TST reaction prevalence, which would enhance BCG's beneficial non-specific effects.PMID:34226104 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2021.06.077 (Source: Vaccine)

Retesting the hypothesis that early Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis vaccination increases female mortality: An observational study within a randomised trial
CONCLUSION: We did not find that early-DTP was associated with increased female mortality as found in a previous study; differences in results may partly be due to a decline in overall mortality and changes in vaccination practices.PMID:34217570 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2021.06.008 (Source: Vaccine)

Hypertension is associated with increased mortality in patients with tuberculosis in Guinea-Bissau
Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a major health problem in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In 2019, WHO estimated that there were 10 million new cases of TB, and 1.4 million deaths due to TB worldwide (World Health Organization, 2020). At the same time, LMICs face a rapid increase in the burden of noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes mellitus (DM) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including coronary heart disease and stroke. More than 75% of cardiovascular deaths occur in LMICs (World Health Organization, 2014). (Source: International Journal of Infectious Diseases)
