Updated mtDNA study of Guinea-Bissau immigrant population living in Lisbon
Guinea-Bissau is a country on the west coast of African Continent. Before the arrival of Europeans and until the XVII century, the territory was part of the Gabu kingdom, Mali Empire. In the past decades the number of immigrants in Portugal has grown and Guinean immigrant community is one of the largest immigrant communities. Most of those immigrants are based in Lisbon metropolitan region.Over the last decades, mtDNA has become an important genetic marker in human and population evolution studies, as well as in forensic and clinical case studies. Severe respiratory involvement in a young-onset limb-girdle muscular dystrophy 2A from Guinea-Bissau associated with a novel pathogenic mutation
Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy 2A (calpainopathy) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the CAPN3 gene, which encodes for calpain-3. In comparison with dystrophinopathy or other muscular dystrophies such as sarcoglycanopathy, respiratory involvement is considered rare and tends to occur in very late stages of the disease. A 27-years-old African male born in Guinea-Bissau presented with severe progressive limb-girdle muscle atrophy and weakness for the previous 12 years. He became wheelchair-bounded in his middle twenties. (Source: Neuromuscular Disorders)

Genetic characterization of Guinea-Bissau using a 12 X-chromosomal STR system: Inferences from a multiethnic population
Publication date: Available online 24 August 2017 Source:Forensic Science International: Genetics Author(s): Iva Gomes, Plácido J.P. Pereira, Sonja Harms, Andréa M. Oliveira, Peter M. Schneider, António Brehm A male West African sample from Guinea-Bissau (West-African coast) was genetically analyzed using 12 X chromosomal short tandem repeats that are grouped into four haplotype groups. Linkage disequilibrium was tested (p≤0.0008) and association was detected for the majority of markers in three out of the four studied haplotype clusters. The sample of 332 unrelated individuals analyzed in this study belonged ...

Plastic and other microfibers in sediments, macroinvertebrates and shorebirds from three intertidal wetlands of southern Europe and west Africa.
Abstract Microplastics are widespread in aquatic environments and can be ingested by a wide range of organisms. They can also be transferred along food webs. Estuaries and other tidal wetlands may be particularly prone to this type of pollution due to their particular hydrological characteristics and sewage input, but few studies have compared wetlands with different anthropogenic pressure. Furthermore, there is no information on microplastic transfer to secondary intertidal consumers such as shorebirds. We analysed intertidal sediments, macroinvertebrates and shorebirds, from three important wetlands alon...

Cost-effectiveness of providing measles vaccination to all children in Guinea-Bissau.
CONCLUSIONS: Taking the low cost of MV and the beneficial non-specific effects of MV into consideration, a 10-dose MV vial should be reclassified as a '1+ dose vial'. The vial should be opened for a single child, irrespective of age, but can vaccinate up to 10 children. PMID: 28580855 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Global Health Action)

Saraiva da Cunha Miliary tuberculosis results from the lymphohematogenous spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and it is a rare form of this disease. The most affected places are the lymph nodes, pleura, and osteoarticular system, but any organ can be involved. Currently the disease is still endemic in developing countries by its close association with poor living conditions and malnutrition. Other comorbidities, particularly infection by h...

Study of InDel genetic markers with forensic and ancestry informative interest in PALOP ’s immigrant populations in Lisboa
AbstractThe migratory phenomenon in Portugal has become one of the main factors for the genetic variability. In the last few years, a new class of autosomal insertion/deletion markers —InDel—has attracted interest in forensic genetics. Since there is no data for InDel markers of Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP) immigrants living in Lisboa, our aim is the characterization of those groups of individuals by typing them with at least 30 InDel markers and to compare d ifferent groups of individuals/populations. We studied 454 bloodstain samples belonging to immigrant individuals from Angola, Guinea-Bissau, and ...
