Can BCG vaccination at first health-facility contact reduce early infant mortality? Study protocol for a cluster-randomised trial (CS-BCG)
Introduction Increasing evidence suggests that the BCG vaccine has non-specific effects, altering the susceptibility to non-tuberculous infections. Thus, early BCG vaccination may reduce mortality. BCG is recommended at birth but is often delayed. Vaccination opportunities are missed due to multidose vials not being opened for a few children. We will assess the effect of making BCG available at the first health-facility contact on early infant mortality and morbidity in a rural setting in Guinea-Bissau. Methods and analysis In a cluster-randomised crossover trial, we randomise 23 health centres to two different treatment ...

Trace elements in relation to trophic ecology of long-distance migratory shorebirds and seabirds in West Africa
Environ Pollut. 2022 Nov 17:120674. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2022.120674. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTShorebirds and seabirds are abundant predators in coastal habitats worldwide, relying upon a high diversity of benthic invertebrates and fish, respectively. While occupying different trophic guilds, they are differently exposed to element contamination entering the coastal food web. Therefore, these birds have been used as bioindicators of environmental contamination in marine ecosystems. We analysed the concentration of trace elements in blood samples of 16 shorebird and seabird migratory species in a major non-breeding si...

Exploring the nexus between natural resource depletion, renewable energy use, and environmental degradation in sub-Saharan Africa
This study explores the nexus between natural resource depletion, renewable energy use, and environmental degradation in 48 sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries from the period 2000 to 2020 using generalized panel quantile regression. The findings show that, at 90th quantiles the magnitude of natural resource depletion is positive and stronger associated with environmental degradation in SSA. This is probably attributed by countries with higher natural resource depletion such as Congo Republic (37.10%), Equatorial Guinea (27.60%), Angola (21.14%), Gabon (12.84%), Chad (12.19%), Burundi (8.92%), Uganda (6.16%), and Congo Dem...

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 12715: Sexual and Reproductive Health Service Needs Associated with Underage Initiation of Selling Sex among Adult Female Sex Workers in Guinea-Bissau
Conclusions: These data suggest that early initiation of selling sex among adult FSW in Guinea-Bissau is common. Social services for youth and integrated HIV and reproductive health services are critical to address the persisting sexual and reproductive health needs of FSW who started selling sex while underage. Point-of-care testing allows successful simultaneous screening of sickle cell disease, HIV, and tuberculosis for households in rural Guinea-Bissau, West Africa
We report successful simultaneous screening of SCD, HIV, and TB utilizing POC tests in 898 subjects in Fanhe, in rural Guinea-Bissau. Adherence was 100% and all diagnosed subjects were enrolled in care programs.PMID:36161764 | DOI:10.1002/pbc.30009 (Source: Rural Remote Health)

National audit on maternal mortality in Guinea-Bissau, West-Africa: A retrospective observational study of 2020
This study performed a national audit of MM over 2020, with the aim to analyse its numbers, characteristics, and causes. We used data of local and regional hospitals where EU/PIMI-II was operating. These hospitals showed lower MMR than previous national figures; however, the exclusion of the main obstetrical referral hospitals, and the unknown number of community-based deliveries make it difficult to compare. Guinea-Bissau still faces enormous challenges in reducing MM. Despite the slow progresses, this study gives us hope, as EU/PIMI-IÍs interventions appeared to have a positive impact in MM reduction.PMID:35971327 | DOI...
