National audit on maternal mortality in Guinea-Bissau, West-Africa: A retrospective observational study of 2020
This study performed a national audit of MM over 2020, with the aim to analyse its numbers, characteristics, and causes. We used data of local and regional hospitals where EU/PIMI-II was operating. These hospitals showed lower MMR than previous national figures; however, the exclusion of the main obstetrical referral hospitals, and the unknown number of community-based deliveries make it difficult to compare. Guinea-Bissau still faces enormous challenges in reducing MM. Despite the slow progresses, this study gives us hope, as EU/PIMI-IÍs interventions appeared to have a positive impact in MM reduction.PMID:35971327 | DOI...

Ketamine-Dexmedetomidine combination (KETODEX) for sedation in pediatric major surgery in a low-income country
We present a series of four cases of anorectal malformations corrections in Guinea Bissau, in children up to 13 months of age, under regional anesthesia and sedation with ketodex, a mixture of ketamine and dexmedetomidine (in a proportion of 1 mg to 1 μg). No child developed respiratory depression requiring airway intervention or supplemental oxygen, or had hemodynamic instability.PMID:35445494 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14465 (Source: Paediatric Anaesthesia)

Tuberculosis contact investigation in African Portuguese-speaking countries at End TB Strategy era: a scoping review
Conclusion This review highlights the scarcity of references on TB contact investigation in PALOP at the End TB Strategy era. Furthermore, it is well clear the importance of an information system that provides actual data for assessing the real impact of such interventions in controlling the disease in African Portuguese-speaking countries. IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 3834: Tuberculosis and Migrant Pathways in an Urban Setting: A Mixed-Method Case Study on a Treatment Centre in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, Portugal
raveiro Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease associated with poverty. In the European Union TB tends to concentrate in urban settings. In Lisbon, previous studies revealed, the presence of migrant populations from a high endemic country, is one of the risk factors contributing to TB. To better understand TB in foreign-born individuals in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, a mixed-method case study was undertaken on a TB treatment centre in a high-risk part of urban Portugal. Quantitatively, annual TB cases were analysed from 2008 to 2018, dividing foreign-origin cases into recent migrants and long-term migrants. Quali...
