Point-of-care ultrasound for tuberculosis diagnosis in children: a Medecins Sans Frontieres cross-sectional study in Guinea-Bissau
Conclusions We found a high prevalence of POCUS signs in children with TB compared with children with unlikely TB. POCUS-positivity was dependent on nutritional status but not on HIV status or age. TB-focused POCUS could potentially play a supportive role in the diagnosis of TB in children. Trial registration number NCT05364593. (Source: BMJ Open)

Overall effect of a campaign with measles vaccine on the composite outcome mortality or hospital admission: a cluster-randomised trial among children aged 9-59 months in rural Guinea-Bissau
In the past decades, the world has implemented numerous campaigns with measles vaccine (C-MV) to control and ultimately eradicate measles[1]. During the same decades overall child mortality has decreased tremendously[2]. Meanwhile, accumulating evidence suggests that MV also prevents infections unrelated to measles[3]. Such potential beneficial non-specific-effects (NSEs) of MV[3] have been examined in an epidemiological review commissioned by the World Health Organization[4]. The review concluded that the evidence is consistent with beneficial NSEs of MV[4]. (Source: International Journal of Infectious Diseases)

Predictors of serum- per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) concentrations among infants in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa
DISCUSSION: Location of residence was the most important determinant of serum-PFAS concentrations among Guinea-Bissau infants, indicating a potential role of diet as affected by the global spread of PFAS, but future studies should explore reasons for the regional differences in PFAS exposure.PMID:37011795 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2023.115784 (Source: Environmental Research)

Inequalities in child immunization coverage: potential lessons from the Guinea-Bissau case
This study aimed to assess full immunization coverage trends and related inequalities, according to wealth, area of residence, subnational regions, and maternal schooling level in Guinea-Bissau. Data from the 2006, 2014, and 2018 Guinea-Bissau Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) were analyzed. The slope index of inequality (SII) was estimated by logistic regression for wealth quintiles and maternal schooling level as a measure of absolute inequality. A linear regression model with variance-weighted least squares was used to estimate the annual change of immunization indicators at the national level and for the extrem...
