The peripheral atherosclerotic profile in patients with type 1 diabetes warrants a thorough vascular assessment of asymptomatic patients
ConclusionsPeripheral artery disease is often undiagnosed in asymptomatic patients with DM1. However, its presence may change medical management in a substantial percentage of cases, highlighting the potential benefit of a thorough vascular assessment on these patients. Resistin is a prognostic factor in type 2 diabetes.
ConclusionsHigher resistin is associated with reduced survival in T2D, irrespectively of TNF ‐α. Resistin concentration of above 11 ng/mL indicates T2D patients at an increased risk of unfavorable outcomes. Leptin was not a prognostic factor. These results suggest that in T2D, association of resistin with unfavorable outcomes might, at least in part, result from its pro‐inflammatory pr operties. Understanding the growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes in the hispanic population living in the united states
AbstractThe prevalence and incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) among the Hispanic population in the United States is higher than the national average. This is partly due to sociocultural factors, such as lower income and decreased access to education and health care, as well as a genetic susceptibility to obesity and higher insulin resistance. This review focuses on understanding the Hispanic population living in the US from a multidisciplinary approach and underlines the importance of cultural, social and biological factors in determining the increased risk of T2D in this population. An overview of the acute and chronic com...

Galectin ‐3 and risk of cardiovascular events and all‐cause mortality in type 2 diabetes
AbstractAimsRecent clinical studies have shown that galectin ‐3 is a prognostic indicator in patients with coronary heart disease and in patients with heart failure. Experimental data suggest that galectin‐3 may play a role in atherogenesis. We have evaluated whether serum galectin‐3 level is associated with cardiovascular outcome in type 2 diabetes.Materials and methodsGalectin ‐3 was measured in baseline samples in 1495 persons with type 2 diabetes. The primary cardiovascular outcome, incident cardiovascular events, was defined as first non‐fatal myocardial infarction, non‐fatal stroke, coronary revasculariza...

Continuous glucose monitoring defined glucose variability is associated with cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy in type 1 diabetes
This study included 80 adults with type 1 diabetes who underwent 3 ‐day CGM and autonomic function tests within 3 months. The degree of association between internationally standardized CGM parameters and CAN, defined as at least two abnormal parasympathetic tests or the presence of orthostatic hypotension, were analysed by logistic regression, receiver operating characteristics (ROC), and dominance analysis.ResultsA total of 36 subjects (45.0%) were diagnosed with CAN. When adjusted with mean glucose and clinical risk factors of CAN, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, mean amplitude of glycaemic excursion...

Physiological factors influencing diabetes control in type 1 diabetes children with insulin pumps from diagnosis
This study focused on 163 children (81 boys) initiated with CSII within 2  weeks after T1D recognition and treated for at least 3 years. We analysed fasting C‐peptide, GADA, ICA, IA2A, BMIz‐score, total daily dose, and basal insulin. Patients were divided into groups according to their metabolic control: 7.5% >  HbA1c ≥ 7.5% at the end of the study.ResultsAt the end of the follow ‐up, patients with HbA1c

Metformin attenuates renal medullary hypoxia in diabetic nephropathy through inhibition uncoupling protein ‐2
ConclusionsMetformin attenuates diabetes ‐induced renal medullary tissue hypoxia in an animal model of insulinopenic type 1 diabetes. The results suggest that the mechanistic pathway to attenuate the diabetes‐induced medullary hypoxia is independent of blood glucose homeostasis and includes reduced UCP2‐mediated mitochondrial proton LEAK. Cognitive impairment and postural control deficit in adults with Type 2 diabetes
AbstractBackgroundDiseases induced by metabolic disorders, eg, Type 2 diabetes, has recently been linked to both sensory and motor deficit in the absence of a formal clinical diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy. Studies have demonstrated mild cognitive impairment in diabetic patients, which also plays a role in one's loss of ability to successfully perform basic motor activities. This project focused on evaluating cognitive function while maintaining balance. We hypothesized that simultaneous cognitive and motor deficit would occur among adults with Type 2 diabetes versus healthy age ‐ and sex‐matched control during a b...

Adipose tissue expression of CCL19 chemokine is positively associated with insulin resistance
This study aimed to investigate the effects of CCL19 gene expression on inflammatory markers in subcutaneous AT and insulin resistance.MethodsSubcutaneous adipose samples were collected from 56 non ‐diabetic (26—obese, 21—overweight, and 9—lean) individuals. Expression of CCL19 and inflammatory markers was determined using real‐time RT‐PCR. Plasma C‐reactive protein (CRP) and adiponectin were measured by ELISA. Insulin sensitivity was assessed using homeostasis model assessment i ndex (HOMA).ResultsCCL19 expression was significantly higher in obese compared with lean individuals (P

Does metabolic syndrome influence short and long term durability of carotid endarterectomy and stenting?
AbstractAimsThe metabolic syndrome (MetS) is composed of a cluster of related cardiovascular risk factors. The aim of the present study was to determine how MetS contributes to short ‐ (30‐day) and long‐term complications and restenosis after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) or stenting (CAS).MethodsA consecutive cohort of 752 patients undergoing CEA (n  = 314) and CAS (n = 438) in a single institution was examined, of which 296 (39.4%) were identified as having MetS. All patients were followed‐up with carotid duplex ultrasound scan of the supraaortic vessels and a neurological assessment of symptom...
