Can laboratory HIV and infectious syphilis data inform future pre-exposure prophylaxis use in women in Ontario, Canada?
Conclusion Although it is clinically appropriate to recommend HIV PrEP to women with syphilis, Ontario surveillance data suggest that the population-level impact of this strategy on the HIV epidemic in Ontario would have been modest during this 11-year period. Future studies should explore additional ways of prioritising women for PrEP. (Source: Sexually Transmitted Infections)

A trial of implementation facilitation to increase timely admission to methadone treatment
During the ongoing opioid epidemic, some Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs) are unable to admit program applicants in a timely fashion. Interim methadone (IM) treatment (without routine counseling) is an effective approach to overcome this challenge when counseling capacity is inadequate to permit admissions within 14  days of request. It requires both federal and state approval and has been rarely utilized since its incorporation into the federal OTP regulations in 1993. (Source: Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment)

Strategies that enabled access to chronic care during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond in South Africa
CONCLUSION: The findings of this study revealed a range of effective and noteworthy approaches that facilitated access to treatment and continuity of care. As a result, enhancing telemedicine as well as structural systems such as appointment scheduling, decanting choices, mobile and medication home delivery can improve access to care and treatment.CONTRIBUTION: The burden of disease and avoidable death will be eventually addressed by maximising the use of telemedicine and sustaining the new norm of ongoing care through digital and remote care and decanting strategies.PMID:38628228 | PMC:PMC11019043 | DOI:10.4102/hsag.v29i0...

Tear Film Dynamics in Visual Display Terminal Users: A Review of Impact on Goblet Cells, Lacrimal and Meibomian Gland Function
CONCLUSION: The alterations have been observed on aqueous, lipid and mucin components of the tear film, although the extent of the impact is variable across studies. There is urgent need of well-designed studies for studying the tear film changes and management options for the upcoming lifestyle epidemic in VDT users.PMID:38629642 | DOI:10.1080/08820538.2024.2332355 (Source: Seminars in Ophthalmology)

Factors Impacting Chinese Older Adults' Intention to Prevent COVID-19 in the Post-COVID-19 Pandemic Era: Survey Study
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that using tailored communication strategies across various media channels can effectively raise health awareness among older adults dealing with major pandemics in China, considering their diverse social capital characteristics and emotional states.PMID:38630517 | DOI:10.2196/53608 (Source: Cell Research)

SARS-CoV-2 Infection, Hospitalization, and Associated Factors Among People Living With HIV in Southeastern China From December 2022 to February 2023: Cross-Sectional Survey
CONCLUSIONS: After the ease of prevention and control measures in China, we observed a high SARS-CoV-2 infection rate but a low hospitalization rate. General risk factors, such as higher age and vaccination status, and HIV-related parameters, such as the latest CD4 cell count and HIV viral load, were associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and hospitalization. A booster vaccination campaign for booster doses should be considered among people living with HIV in confronting possible COVID-19 epidemic emergencies in the near future.PMID:38630534 | DOI:10.2196/51449 (Source: Cancer Control)

Genomic Approach of Listeria monocytogenes Strains Isolated from Deli-Meats in Mexico
Curr Microbiol. 2024 Apr 17;81(6):145. doi: 10.1007/s00284-024-03680-2.ABSTRACTListeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that causes listeriosis worldwide. In México, L. monocytogenes has been identified as a hazard of deli-meats. However, the genomic analysis that supports the transmission of L. monocytogenes strains via deli-meats and its role as a source for virulence and resistance genes is lacking. Here, we present four high-quality genome drafts of L. monocytogenes strains isolated from deli-meats in Mexico. In silico typing was used to determine the serotype, lineage, clonal complexes (CC), and multilocus sequ...
