Internet-Based Versus Face-to-Face Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder: A Randomized Control Trial
Behav Ther. 2024 May;55(3):528-542. doi: 10.1016/j.beth.2023.08.005. Epub 2023 Sep 4.ABSTRACTDuring the COVID-19 epidemic, face-to-face mental health services faced obstacles. Using Internet-based interventions was a good solution and had the potential to overcome these treatment barriers. However, there is no strong research evidence about the effectiveness of these methods for social anxiety disorder in different cultures and developing countries. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and application of Internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder in Iran. The curr...

Chemical characterization and source apportionment of PM < sub > 2.5 < /sub > in a Northeastern China city during the epidemic period
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33473-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo investigate the influence of COVID-19 lockdown measures on PM2.5 and its chemical components in Shenyang, PM2.5 samples were continuously collected from January 1 to May 31, 2020. The samples were then analyzed for water-soluble inorganic ions, metal elements, organic carbon, and elemental carbon. The findings indicated a significant decrease in PM2.5 and its various chemical components during the lockdown period, compared to pre-lockdown levels (p < 0.05), suggesting a substantial improvement in air quality. Water...

Opiate-reduction protocol for common outpatient spinal procedures: a long-term feasibility study and single-center experience
CONCLUSIONS: A standardized discharge protocol for postoperative outpatient spinal procedures can lead to long-term reductions in opioid discharge quantity, without compromising patient safety or increasing the utilization of hospital resources through readmissions, refill requests, or clinic phone calls. This study provides an example of a feasible and effective discharge prescription regimen that may be generalizable to common outpatient neurosurgical procedures with long-term evidence that a small intervention can lead to ongoing reduced quantities of postoperative opioids at the time of discharge.PMID:38669713 | DOI:10...

Spatial distribution and determinants of HIV high burden in the Southern African sub-region
ConclusionsOur research findings show that analysis of survey data could provide reasonable estimates of the wide-ranging spatial structure of the HIV epidemic in Southern African countries. Key determinants such as individuals who are divorced, middle-aged women, and people who recently treated STIs, should be the focus of HIV prevention and control interventions. The spatial distribution of high-burden areas for HIV in the selected countries was more pronounced in the major cities. Interventions should also be focused on locations identified as hotspot clusters. (Source: PLoS One)

The Impact of Transmissible Microbes: How the Cystic Fibrosis Community Mobilized Against Cepacia
Perspect Biol Med. 2023;66(1):89-106. doi: 10.1353/pbm.2023.0005.ABSTRACTLong before COVID-19 made social distancing familiar, people with cystic fibrosis (CF) already practiced such behaviors. CF is held up as a classic example of genetic disease, yet people with CF are also susceptible to bacteria from the environment and from other CF patients. Starting in the 1980s, a bacterial epidemic in the CF population highlighted clashing priorities of connection, physical safety, and environmental protection. Policymakers ultimately called for the physical separation of people with CF from one another via recommendations that re...
