Quantification of the burden of chronic kidney disease in Latin America: an invisible epidemicQuantifica ção da carga da doença renal crônica na América Latina: uma epidemia invisível
CONCLUSIONS: Chronic kidney disease is an invisible epidemic that places an excessive burden in terms of mortality and DALYs on Latin American countries. It is essential to join forces to tackle the disease in the region, and promote local actions that address the particularities of each country.PMID:38623527 | PMC:PMC11018258 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2024.41 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

Indirect interaction between an endemic and an invading pathogen: A case study of Plasmodium and Usutu virus dynamics in a shared bird host population
Theor Popul Biol. 2024 Apr 16;157:118-128. doi: 10.1016/j.tpb.2024.04.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInfectious disease agents can influence each other's dynamics in shared host populations. We consider such influence for two mosquito-borne infections where one pathogen is endemic at the time that a second pathogen invades. We regard a setting where the vector has a bias towards biting host individuals infected with the endemic pathogen and where there is a cost to co-infected hosts. As a motivating case study, we regard Plasmodium spp., that cause avian malaria, as the endemic pathogen, and Usutu virus (USUV) as the i...

Modelling the impact of hybrid immunity on future COVID-19 epidemic waves
Since the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), there have been multiple waves of infection and multiple rounds of vaccination rollouts. Both prior infection and vaccination can prevent future infection and redu... (Source: BMC Infectious Diseases)

Generative Bayesian modeling to nowcast the effective reproduction number from line list data with missing symptom onset dates
by Adrian Lison, Sam Abbott, Jana Huisman, Tanja Stadler The time-varying effective reproduction numberRt is a widely used indicator of transmission dynamics during infectious disease outbreaks. Timely estimates ofRt can be obtained from reported cases counted by their date of symptom onset, which is generally closer to the time of infection than the date of report. Case counts by date of symptom onset are typically obtained from line list data, however these data can have missing information and are subject to right truncation. Previous methods have addressed these problems independently by first imputing missing onset d...

Association of liver function and prognosis in patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome
by Shaoqiu Zhang, Jian Wang, Qun Zhang, Yifan Pan, Zhiyi Zhang, Yu Geng, Bei Jia, Yuanyuan Li, Yali Xiong, Xiaomin Yan, Jie Li, Huali Wang, Chao Wu, Rui Huang ObjectivesSevere fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an epidemic emerging infectious disease with high mortality rate. We investigated the association between liver injury and clinical outcomes in patients with SFTS. MethodsA total of 291 hospitalized SFTS patients were retrospectively included. Cox proportional hazards model was adopted to identify risk factors of fatal outcome and Kaplan-Meier curves were used to estimate cumulative risks. Results60.1% o...

Kaposi's Sarcoma with Primary Lymph Node Involvement in a Retroviral Infected (RVI) Patient
Int Med Case Rep J. 2024 Apr 8;17:311-319. doi: 10.2147/IMCRJ.S458320. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTOne kind of angioproliferative disorder is Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). Growth of spindle-shaped cells, edema, inflammation, and neoangiogenesis are its defining features. Because it lacks the typical indicators of malignancy, it is classified as an intermediate neoplasm. People who are immunocompromised, receiving organ transplants, or receiving antiretroviral therapy are linked to KS. Although lymph node involvement by KS is extremely uncommon, when it does occur, it usually manifests as either the epidemic form in (Human Immuno-def...

Noncoding RNAs in Alzheimer's Disease: Overview of Functional and Therapeutic Significance
Curr Top Med Chem. 2024 Apr 9. doi: 10.2174/0115680266293212240405042540. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlzheimer's disease (AD) is a multifactorial disorder resulting from the complex interaction between genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. It represents an impending epidemic and lacks effective pharmacological interventions. The emergence of high throughput sequencing techniques and comprehensive genome evaluation has uncovered a diverse spectrum of non-- coding RNA (ncRNA) families. ncRNAs are the critical modulators of an eclectic array of biological processes and are now transpiring as imperative players in...

Caught in the name game: navigating the data linkage conundrum.
A key risk mitigation strategy to address the opioid epidemic - prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMP) are used to monitor prescription trends, prevent diversion and misuse, and reduce multiple provider encounters(1,2). However, recent systematic reviews show mixed results on PDMP's effectiveness in reducing the number of opioid prescriptions and related overdose, and there is a paucity of research on patient outcomes(2,3). PDMPs primarily serve as data clearinghouses, thus any compromise in data integrity can be clinically harmful. (Source: Journal of Pain and Symptom Management)
