Perceived Hospital Preparedness Is Negatively Associated With Pandemic-Induced Psychological Vulnerability in Primary Care Employees: A Multicentre Cross-Sectional Observational Study
CONCLUSIONS: Difficult working conditions during the pandemic had a major impact on the psychological wellbeing of emergency department HPs, but this effect might have been lessened if they had been informed about adequate measures for minimizing the risk of exposure.PMID:38600791 | DOI:10.1002/cpp.2969 (Source: Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy)

Development of Mucoadhesive Microspheres for Intranasal Delivery of Fluconazole as an Alternative Treatment of Cryptococcal Meningitis Infection in Patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency
This study aimed to develop a mucoadhesive microsphere delivery system for fluconazole for the intranasal route. Microspheres of mucoadhesive fluconazole formulation variables, such as different amounts of drug concentration and polymer concentration, were prepared by a simple emulsion-crosslinking method. The prepared microspheres' surface was characterised by SEM (Scanning electron microscopy) and evaluated for particle size, entrapment efficiency, production yield, infrared spectroscopic study, in-vitro mucoadhesion, and in-vitro drug release. The results showed that formula 1 is the optimal mucoadhesive microsphere pre...

Trends and predictors of unmet need for family planning among women living with HIV in Zambia: implications for elimination of vertical transmission of HIV
Prevention of vertical (mother to child) transmission of HIV is one of the key strategies towards HIV epidemic control. Despite considerable progress over the past decade in Zambia, the country is yet to reach... (Source: BMC Public Health)

Enteric coronavirus nsp2 is a virulence determinant that recruits NBR1 for autophagic targeting of TBK1 to diminish the innate immune response
Autophagy. 2024 Apr 10. doi: 10.1080/15548627.2024.2340420. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNon-structural protein 2 (nsp2) exists in all coronaviruses (CoVs), while its primary function in viral pathogenicity, is largely unclear. One such enteric CoV, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), causes high mortality in neonatal piglets worldwide. To determine the biological role of nsp2, we generated a PEDV mutant containing a complete nsp2 deletion (rPEDV-Δnsp2) from a highly pathogenic strain by reverse genetics, showing that nsp2 was dispensable for PEDV infection, while its deficiency reduced viral replication in vitro. In...

Wolbachia-carrying Aedes mosquitoes for preventing dengue infection
CONCLUSIONS: The included trial demonstrates the potential significant impact of wMel-Wolbachia-carrying Ae aegypti mosquitoes on preventing dengue infection in an endemic setting, and supports evidence reported in non-randomized and uncontrolled studies. Further trials across a greater diversity of settings are required to confirm whether these findings apply to other locations and country settings, and greater reporting of acceptability and cost are important.PMID:38597256 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD015636.pub2 (Source: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews)

Effectiveness of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir versus azvudine for adult inpatients with severe or critical COVID-19
CONCLUSION: Paxlovid and azvudine had similar effectiveness on in-hospital all-cause mortality and hospital length of stay. Compared with the azvudine group, after 7 days of therapy, the degree of decline in SOFA score was significantly higher in the Paxlovid group. These findings need to be verified in larger prospective studies or randomised controlled trials.PMID:38599779 | DOI:10.1136/bmjresp-2023-001944 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Assessing the Time Evolution of COVID-19 Effective Reproduction Number in Brazil
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2024 Apr 5;96(1):e20221050. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202420221050. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTIn this paper, we use a Bayesian method to estimate the effective reproduction number ( R ( t ) ), in the context of monitoring the time evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil at different geographic levels. The focus of this study is to investigate the similarities between the trends in the evolution of such indicators at different subnational levels with the trends observed nationally. The underlying question addressed is whether national surveillance of such variables is enough to provide a picture of the e...
