Autopsy case of meningoencephalitis induced by nivolumab and ipilimumab in a patient being treated for non-small cell lung cancer
Intern Med. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.2169/internalmedicine.3457-24. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 75-year-old woman with stage IVB (cT2bN3M1b) lung adenocarcinoma was administered nivolumab, ipilimumab, carboplatin, and paclitaxel. Fourteen days after receiving chemotherapy, she experienced an impaired consciousness and a cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed high protein levels and pleocytosis. She was diagnosed with nivolumab- and ipilimumab-induced encephalitis and was treated with corticosteroids which were tapered to 10 mg/day, with no symptom recurrence. She died 18 weeks after the initial presentation, as the cancer w...

Corticospinal tract hyperintensity in patients with LGI1-antibody encephalitis and other central nervous system disorders with neuroglial antibodies
The frequency of corticospinal tract (CST) T2/FLAIR hyperintensity in disorders with neuroglial antibodies is unclear. Herein, we retrospectively reviewed brain MRIs of 101 LGI1-antibody encephalitis patients, and observed CST hyperintensity in 30/101(30%). It was mostly bilateral (93%), not associated with upper motor neuron signs/symptoms (7%), and frequently decreased over time (39%). In a systematic review including patients with other neuroglial antibodies, CST hyperintensity was reported in 110 with neuromyelitis optica (94%), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-associated disease (2%), Ma2-antibody (3%) and GAD65-an...

Efficacy and safety of phenytoin and levetiracetam for acute symptomatic seizures in children with acute encephalitis syndrome: an open label, randomised controlled trial.
Acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) encompasses a diverse range of inflammatory brain parenchymal diseases that share similar clinical presentations.[1] This syndrome is characterized by the sudden onset of fever and altered sensorium, with or without seizures (excluding febrile seizures).[2] Globally, the reported incidence of encephalitis varies from 6.3 to 7.4 cases per 100,000 individuals across all age groups and 10.5 to 13.8 cases per 100,000 children.[3] (Source: Seizure: European Journal of Epilepsy)

Marchiafava-Bignami disease: why not Marchiafava-Bignami-Carducci disease?
AbstractThe Marchiafava-Bignami disease has a curious backstory, namely, the publication in 1898 of theContribution to the Study of Nonsuppurative Encephalitis (Carducci A in Riv Psicol Psichiat Neuropat 8-9:125-135,1898), in which the neo-graduate Agostino Carducci described the disease that the pathologists Ettore Marchiafava and Amico Bignami would report 5 years later. Guide for the treatment of acute altered mental status. Iberoamerican Academy of Pediatric Neurology
Rev Neurol. 2024 Apr 16;78(8):229-235. doi: 10.33588/rn.7808.2023302.ABSTRACTIn pediatric patients, an acute altered mental status refers to a sudden and significant change in a child's brain function and level of consciousness. It may manifest as confusion, disorientation, agitation, lethargy or even a loss of consciousness. This condition is a medical emergency, and requires immediate evaluation and attention. There are several causes of acute altered mental status in children, including infections of the central nervous system such as meningitis or encephalitis, traumatic brain injury, metabolic disorders, seizures and ...
