The Effect of Thiazolidinediones in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomised Controlled Trials
CONCLUSION: Both pioglitazone and rosiglitazone were associated with significant increases in body weight and BMI when compared with metformin or placebo. Pioglitazone significantly reduced triglycerides and fasting insulin when compared with placebo while rosiglitazone showed a modest reduction of LH when compared with metformin.PROSPERO REGISTRATION NO: CRD42020178783.PMID:38683294 | DOI:10.1007/s12325-024-02848-3 (Source: Adv Data)

Predictors and Trends of Diabetic Ketoacidosis at Diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in Malaysian Children
CONCLUSION: DKA rates at initial diagnosis of T1DM in Malaysian children are high and severe DKA accounts for a significant burden. Though misdiagnosis and age ≥5 years are predictors of DKA, misdiagnosis can be improved through awareness and education. The lack of downward trends in DKA and severe DKA highlights the urgency to develop measures to curb its rates.PMID:38683019 | DOI:10.4274/jcrpe.galenos.2024.2024-1-8 (Source: JCRPE Journal of Clinical Research in Pediatric Endocrinology)

Twin Study: The Factors Affecting the Serum LDL-C and HDL-C Levels and an RNA-Seq Analysis in Mononuclear Cells in Monozygotic Twins
CONCLUSION: We identified the factors affecting the LDL-C or HDL-C levels in monozygotic twins. In addition, some types of inflammatory gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells were suppressed in accordance with the HDL-C levels, thus suggesting the importance of weight management and exercise habits in addition to dietary instructions to control the LDL-C or HDL-C levels.PMID:38684403 | DOI:10.5551/jat.64882 (Source: Journal of Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis)

The prognostic impact of insulin resistance surrogates in patients with acute myocardial infarction with and without type 2 diabetes
CONCLUSIONS: TyG index was an independent risk factor for in-hospital death in patients with STEMI or NSTEMI. TyG index, TyG-BMI and METS-IR were not independent risk factors for MACCE at 12 month follow-up. TyG index and METS-IR have low predictive value in predicting MACCE within 12 months after STEMI and NSTEMI.PMID:38685054 | DOI:10.1186/s12933-024-02240-z (Source: Atherosclerosis)

LncRNA ANRIL Promotes Glucose Metabolism and Proliferation of Colon Cancer in a High-Glucose Environment and is Associated with Worse Outcome in Diabetic Colon Cancer Patients
CONCLUSIONS: A high-glucose environment can increase the tumor-promoting effect of ANRIL. ANRIL can promote glucose metabolism and colon cancer proliferation by downregulating miR-186-5p with subsequent upregulation of glycolysis enzymes expression and inhibition of apoptosis.PMID:38679999 | DOI:10.31557/APJCP.2024.25.4.1371 (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Practical considerations for continuous glucose monitoring in elite athletes with type 1 diabetes mellitus: A narrative review
J Physiol. 2024 Apr 28. doi: 10.1113/JP285836. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTType 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) refers to a metabolic condition where a lack of insulin impairs the usual homeostatic mechanisms to control blood glucose levels. Historically, participation in competitive sport has posed a challenge for those with T1DM, where the dynamic changes in blood glucose during exercise can result in dangerously high (hyperglycaemia) or low blood glucoses (hypoglycaemia) levels. Over the last decade, research and technological development has enhanced the methods of monitoring and managing blood glucose levels, thus reduci...

Assessing the possible association between MTHFR (rs1801133) and GPx-1 (rs1050450) polymorphisms with the risk of type 2 diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, and diabetic retinopathy
CONCLUSION: The MTHFR TT genotype increased the risk of neuropathy in diabetic patients significantly. The GPx-1 CT genotype is related to increased retinopathy risk among diabetic patients. Both MTHFR and Gpx-1 TT genotypes were associated with higher BMI levels.PMID:38683407 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09519-0 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Influence of blood glucose fluctuations on chemotherapy efficacy and safety in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients complicated with lung carcinoma
CONCLUSION: The greater the BG fluctuation in LC patients after chemotherapy, the more unfavorable the therapeutic effect of chemotherapy; the higher the level of tumor markers and inflammatory cytokines, the more adverse reactions the patient experiences.PMID:38680689 | PMC:PMC11045413 | DOI:10.4239/wjd.v15.i4.645 (Source: Cancer Control)

Diabetes as a risk factor for pneumococcal disease and severe related outcomes and efficacy/effectiveness of vaccination in diabetic population. Results from meta-analysis of observational studies
ConclusionsPeople with diabetes mellitus are at higher risk for less favourable course of pneumococcal disease and should be therefore targeted in vaccination campaigns; more evidence needs to be collected on vaccination outcomes in people with diabetes. (Source: Acta Diabetologica)
