New insights into the roles of Irisin in diabetic cardiomyopathy and vascular diseases
Biomed Pharmacother. 2024 Apr 24;175:116631. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2024.116631. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiabetes mellitus (DM) is a prevalent chronic disease in the 21st century due to increased lifespan and unhealthy lifestyle choices. Extensive research indicates that exercise can play a significant role in regulating systemic metabolism by improving energy metabolism and mitigating various metabolic disorders, including DM. Irisin, a well-known exerkine, was initially reported to enhance energy expenditure by indicating the browning of white adipose tissue (WAT) through peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor Î...

Colorectal Cancer and Subsequent Diabetes Risk: A Population-based Cohort Study in Taiwan
CONCLUSION: Patients with CRC are associated with an elevated risk of diabetes mellitus, and long-term chemotherapy, particularly involving capecitabine, increases diabetes mellitus risk. Thus, monitoring blood glucose levels is crucial for patients with CRC, especially during extended chemotherapy.PMID:38661006 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae257 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)

Mutational spectrum of CFTR in cystic fibrosis patients with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary manifestations
CONCLUSION: The study reports novel and reported variants in the CFTR gene in CF patients in Pakistani population having distinct phenotypes. It also emphasizes screening suspected Pakistani CF patients for the p. (Met1Thr) variant because of its increased observance and prevalence in the study. Moreover, the findings also signify searching for additional pathogenic variants in the genome of CF patients, which may modify the phenotypes. The findings contribute valuable information for the diagnosis, genetic counseling, and potential therapeutic strategies for CF patients in Pakistan.PMID:38662334 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-0...

The latest emerging drugs for the treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy
Expert Opin Pharmacother. 2024 Apr 25. doi: 10.1080/14656566.2024.2347468. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a serious complication of diabetes mellitus involving multiple pathophysiologic mechanisms. In addition to hypoglycemic agents commonly used in diabetes, metabolism-related drugs, natural plant extracts, melatonin, exosomes, and rennin-angiotensin-aldosterone system are cardioprotective in DCM. However, there is a lack of systematic summarization of drugs for DCM.AREAS COVERED: In this review, the authors systematically summarize the most recent drugs used for the treatment...

A Bibliometric Analysis of Study of Associations of Certain Genotypes with the Cardiovascular Form of Diabetic Neuropathy
Biomed Res Int. 2024 Apr 15;2024:6761451. doi: 10.1155/2024/6761451. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTThis bibliometric analysis explores the landscape of research on the associations between specific genotypes and the cardiovascular form of diabetic neuropathy. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major contributor to premature mortality, primarily due to increased susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases. The global prevalence of DM is rising, with projections indicating further increases. Diabetic neuropathy, a complication of DM, includes the cardiovascular subtype, posing challenges in diagnosis and management. Understanding the gene...

Heart failure: the grim reaper of the cardio ‐renal‐metabolic triad
ConclusionsIn a cohort of CKD patients, having HF contributes substantially to increased mortality and the risk of MACE, and these patients are less likely to start KRT. These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted therapeutic strategies and management plans for CKD patients, particularly those with concurrent HF, to enhance patient prognosis. The Association Between Unintended Pregnancy and Perinatal Outcomes in Low ‐Risk Pregnancies: A Retrospective Registry Study in the Netherlands
This study used data (N = 9803) from a Dutch nationally representative registry of people with low-risk pregnancies receiving primary midwife-led care in the Netherlands between 2012 and 2020. Using logistic (mediation) regression analyses adjusted for potential confounders we investigated associations between unintended pregnancy and neonatal outcomes (low Apgar score, small for gestational age, and prematurity), parental morbidity (hypertension and gestational diabetes mellitus), and obstetric interventions (induction of labor, pain medication, assisted vaginal birth, and cesarean birth) and whether delayed initiation of...
