Nutritional status and its relationship with COVID-19 prognosis in hemodialysis patients
CONCLUSIONS: higher body mass index and higher body fat content, along with lower baseline levels of triglycerides and ferritin, are significantly associated with higher COVID-19 mortality in patients on chronic hemodialysis. These findings suggest that the initial nutritional status of these patients can significantly influence the prognosis of SARSCoV-2 infection.PMID:38666342 | DOI:10.20960/nh.04850 (Source: Nutricion Hospitalaria)

Long-Term Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet Reduces 20-Year Diabetes Incidence: The ATTICA Cohort Study (2002-2022)
This study aimed to evaluate the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and the 20-year incidence of type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among adults from the ATTICA study. This study involved a prospective cohort of 3042 men and women recruited at baseline from the Attica region in Greece. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, lifestyle, and clinical characteristics were evaluated at baseline and follow-up examinations; adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed through the MedDietScore (range 0-55); four Mediterranean diet trajectories were identified (i.e., increasing, decreasing, and sustained high and ...

Comprehensive Insights into Pediatric Craniopharyngioma: Endocrine and Metabolic Profiles, Treatment Challenges, and Long-term Outcomes with a Multicenter Approach
CONCLUSION: Recurrence was predominantly due to incomplete resection and the low rate of postoperative radiotherapy. It also emphasized challenges in multidisciplinary regular follow ups and suggested early interventions such as dietary restrictions and increased exercise to prevent obesity.PMID:38664994 | DOI:10.4274/jcrpe.galenos.2024.2024-1-3 (Source: JCRPE Journal of Clinical Research in Pediatric Endocrinology)

Exploring Australian Dietitians' knowledge, experience and perspectives of time ‐restricted eating in private practice: A qualitative study
SummaryTime-restricted eating is a novel nutrition intervention with evidence of beneficial effects on weight loss, blood glucose management, and other metabolic health outcomes. Adherence to time-restricted eating is higher than some traditional nutrition interventions to support individuals living with overweight/obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, there may be an evidence-practice gap of time-restricted eating in Australian dietetic practice. The present study aimed to explore dietitians' knowledge, experiences, and perspectives of time-restricted eating and timing of eating advice in practice. Semi-structure...

Emerging Perspectives on the Impact of Diabetes Mellitus and Anti-Diabetic Drugs on Premenstrual Syndrome. A Narrative Review
AbstractDiabetes mellitus (DM) and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) are global health challenges. Both disorders are often linked to a range of physical and psychological symptoms that significantly impact the quality of life of many women. Yet, the exact relation between DM and PMS is not clear, and the management of both conditions poses a considerable challenge. In this review, we aimed to investigate the interplay between DM, anti-diabetic drugs, and the different theories and symptoms of PMS. Female sex hormones are implicated in the pathophysiology of PMS and can also impair blood glucose control. In addition, patients wi...

An Analysis of the Distribution of Direct Cost of Diabetes Care in Selected Districts in Italy
ConclusionAnnual cost of treatment for people with diabetes is similar for those treated with MDI or with basal insulin only, with hospitalization being the main cost driver. This indicates that both patient groups should benefit from having access to scanning continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology which is known to be associated with significantly reduced hospitalization for acute diabetes events, compared to self-monitored blood glucose (SMBG) testing. A cohort study of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors after acute kidney injury among Veterans with diabetic kidney disease.
Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) reduce the risk for several adverse outcomes among patients with diabetic kidney disease. Yet, optimal timing for SGLT2i after acute kidney injury (AKI) is uncertain, as are the providers responsible for post-AKI SGLT2i initiation. Using a retrospective cohort of United States Veterans with diabetes mellitus type 2 and proteinuria, we examined encounters by provider specialty before SGLT2i initiation and subsequent all-cause mortality after hospitalization with AKI, defined by a 50% or more rise in serum creatinine. Effect of diabetes mellitus on global longitudinal strain
The global longitudinal strain (GLS) of the left ventricle (LV) is considered an effective measure for the evaluation of ventricular function, especially in the absence of systolic dysfunction or in its earliest forms, and it correlates strongly with LV ejection fraction (LVEF) (1 –3). Age, gender, and impaired LVEF have been identified as leading factors for higher GLS(2). Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) have a higher risk of developing ventricular dysfunction and heart failure (HF)(4). We hypothesized that DM could be have a higher impact on GLS in patients with HF. (Source: The American Journal of Cardiology)
