Fecal microbiota is associated with extraintestinal manifestations in inflammatory bowel disease
CONCLUSIONS: The fecal microbiota in IBD patients with EIMs is distinct from that in IBD patients without EIM and could be important for EIM pathogenesis.PMID:38648495 | PMC:PMC11036898 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2024.2338244 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Increased cancer incidence among patients with hidradenitis suppurativa - a Danish nationwide register study 1977-2017
Acta Oncol. 2024 Apr 21;63:220-228. doi: 10.2340/1651-226X.2024.26182.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: The chronic, inflammatory skin disease hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) (prevalence: 0.5%-1%, diagnostic delay: 7-10 years) primarily arises in younger adults and frequently coincides with autoimmune comorbidities and unhealthy life-styles (smoking and obesity). These factors are known to increase cancer risk, but despite this, information on cancer occurrence among HS patients is scarce.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A nationwide retrospective register-based study assessing relative risk of cancer - overall and by anatomical site - following HS...

Combined first-trimester screening and invasive diagnostics for atypical chromosomal aberrations: Danish nationwide data on prenatal profiles and detection compared with NIPT
CONCLUSION: As a by-product to screening for trisomies 21, 18, and 13, most triploidies and the majority of atypical SCAs, RATs, and mosaicisms are detected before birth. However, only 23% of pCNVs are high-risk from cFTS and only half are diagnosed before birth. Replacing invasive testing with NIPT for high-risk pregnancies would substantially decrease the first-trimester detection of pathogenic chromosomal anomalies. This article is protected by copyright. The global impact of SARS-CoV-2 variant BA.2.86: a comprehensive analysis with the latest developments and transmission trends - an epidemiological study
CONCLUSIONS: The SARS-CoV-2, novel variant BA.2.86, spread over six continents and 89 countries and affected 19,532 people worldwide. The disease is more prevalent in the United Kingdom, United States of America, and European countries. The detection of the disease in multiple continents and countries suggests some degree of transmissibility. Global health authorities need to rethink their policies and implement strict strategies to eradicate emerging variants and minimize the global disease burden.PMID:38639533 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_35928 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

Seronegative patients with primary Sj ögren's syndrome and non-pSS sicca test positive for anti-SSA/Ro52 and -Ro60 in saliva
CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that salivary anti-SSA/Ro antibodies are potential discriminatory biomarkers for pSS, which may also identify seronegative patients, addressing the unmet clinical need of early detection and stratification of pSS.PMID:38641012 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbadis.2024.167168 (Source: Biochimica et Biophysica Acta)
