Protocol for a prospective multicentre cohort study to address the question whether diabetes and its management is still a risk factor in fast-track joint arthroplasty
Introduction Perioperative glycaemic control is important. However, the complexity of guidelines for perioperative diabetes management is complicated due to different and novel antihyperglycaemic medications, limited procedure-specific data and lack of data from implemented fast-track regimens which otherwise are known to reduce morbidity and glucose homeostasis disturbances. Consequently, outcome in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) after surgery and the influence of perioperative diabetes management on postoperative recovery remains poorly understood. Methods and analysis A prospective observational multicentre study...

Social characteristics and social benefit use among premenopausal breast cancer survivors in Denmark: a population-based cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Use of social benefits reflecting lost ability to work was highest in less educated women and in women living alone.IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: Awareness of these groups is crucial when tailoring efforts to support work participation in cancer survivors.PMID:38647591 | DOI:10.1007/s11764-024-01598-z (Source: Clinical Breast Cancer)

Increased cancer incidence among patients with hidradenitis suppurativa - a Danish nationwide register study 1977-2017
Acta Oncol. 2024 Apr 21;63:220-228. doi: 10.2340/1651-226X.2024.26182.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: The chronic, inflammatory skin disease hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) (prevalence: 0.5%-1%, diagnostic delay: 7-10 years) primarily arises in younger adults and frequently coincides with autoimmune comorbidities and unhealthy life-styles (smoking and obesity). These factors are known to increase cancer risk, but despite this, information on cancer occurrence among HS patients is scarce.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A nationwide retrospective register-based study assessing relative risk of cancer - overall and by anatomical site - following HS...

Fecal microbiota is associated with extraintestinal manifestations in inflammatory bowel disease
CONCLUSIONS: The fecal microbiota in IBD patients with EIMs is distinct from that in IBD patients without EIM and could be important for EIM pathogenesis.PMID:38648495 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2024.2338244 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Challenges in the management of new daily persistent headache at a tertiary headache center-A retrospective real-world evidence study
CONCLUSION: In this study we add real-world evidence to suggest that prophylactic drugs conventionally used for treating chronic migraine and chronic tension-type headache have limited utility for treating NDPH; however, a partial response in 26% of patients using candesartan and 15% of patients using mirtazapine warrants further investigation in randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled trials.PMID:38646979 | DOI:10.1111/head.14715 (Source: Headache)

The global impact of SARS-CoV-2 variant BA.2.86: a comprehensive analysis with the latest developments and transmission trends - an epidemiological study
CONCLUSIONS: The SARS-CoV-2, novel variant BA.2.86, spread over six continents and 89 countries and affected 19,532 people worldwide. The disease is more prevalent in the United Kingdom, United States of America, and European countries. The detection of the disease in multiple continents and countries suggests some degree of transmissibility. Global health authorities need to rethink their policies and implement strict strategies to eradicate emerging variants and minimize the global disease burden.PMID:38639533 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_35928 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

Paternal use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and adverse health outcomes: A nationwide cohort study on 13,547 exposed children
This study aimed to assess adverse birth outcomes and adverse early life events in children fathered by men using SSRIs prior to conception.Materials and methodsAll live-born singleton children born in Denmark from 1997 until 2019 and their parents were included. The exposed cohort comprised all children fathered by men using SSRIs 3 months prior to conception and the unexposed cohort comprised all other children. We estimated the odds ratios for adverse birth outcomes: small for gestational age (SGA), preterm birth, low Apgar score, and major congenital malformations. Furthermore, we estimated the hazard ratios for advers...

Reducing workload in malignant melanoma sentinel node examination: a national study of pathology reports from 507 melanoma patients
Conclusions Reducing the number of levels examined to three levels 300 µm apart combined with IHC does not have significant impact on metastasis detection rate, and we will therefore recommend that the future melanoma SN guideline takes this into consideration to reduce overall workload. Delaying anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction for more than 3 or 6  months results in lower risk of revision surgery
ConclusionThe risk of revision ACLR surgery was found to be increased when ACLR was performed within 3  months or 6 months of injury compared with later surgery. The 1 year postoperative objective knee laxity and the subjective patient-related outcome was found to be without a clinically significant difference; however, those with early ACLR (<  3 months or <  6 months) were found to have a higher activity level 1 year postoperatively. The information about increased risk of revision when having early surgery should be informed to patients when deciding timing of ACLR treatment.Level of evidence: II. (Sou...
