Endovascular therapy versus bypass for chronic limb-threatening ischemia in a real-world practice
The recent BEST-CLI study showed that bypass was superior to endovascular therapy (ET) in patients with chronic limb threatening ischemia (CLTI) deemed suitable for either approach who had an available single segment great saphenous vein (GSV). However, the superiority of bypass among those lacking GSV was not established. We aimed to examine comparative treatment outcomes from a real-world CLTI population using the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI)-Medicare-Linked database. (Source: Journal of Vascular Surgery)

Factors Influencing Palliative and End-of-Life Care for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities: A Scoping Review of Health and Care Workers' Experiences
J Soc Work End Life Palliat Care. 2024 May 5:1-19. doi: 10.1080/15524256.2024.2346113. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn developed countries, there has been an increase in the longevity of adults with intellectual disabilities. In the later stages of their lives, people with intellectual disability have specific needs in terms of palliative and end-of-life care that need to be better understood in order to offer appropriate care. This scoping review aimed to identify the main factors influencing the provision of palliative and end-of-life care from the perspective of health and care workers involved with adults with an inte...

Evaluating the efficacy and safety of nivolumab and ipilimumab combination therapy compared to nivolumab monotherapy in advanced cancers (excluding melanoma): a systemic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Combining nivolumab and ipilimumab did not significantly improve overall survival compared to nivolumab alone in advanced cancers (except melanoma). However, it did show slightly better PFS at the cost of increased toxicity, particularly grades 3-4 adverse events. Specific AEs occurred more frequently in the combination group. Further trials are needed to fully assess this combination in treating advanced cancers.PMID:38705953 | DOI:10.1186/s43046-024-00218-2 (Source: J Egypt Natl Canc In...)

Paracetamol overdose in Danish children and adolescents during the Covid-19 restrictions
CONCLUSIONS: During the first year of restrictions, a slight decrease in paracetamol overdoses was observed, possibly associated with limited accessibility. The second year showed a considerable increase in paracetamol overdoses, which may imply an affected mental state among youth during the prolonged lockdown restrictions as seen in previous epidemics. Therefore, further studies are warranted to develop a pandemic preparedness plan to protect general mental health.FUNDING: None.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not relevant.PMID:38704838 | DOI:10.61409/A08230494 (Source: Danish Medical Journal)

Teaching-Learning Programs to Prevent and Control Infections Related to Long-Term Central Venous Access Device in Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSION: The teaching-learning programs were implemented through theoretical-practical and theoretical dimensions in five and two studies, respectively. The risk of bias in the studies was low, moderate, severe, and high in one, three, two, and one of them, respectively. The certainty was very low. Teaching-learning programs on central venous access devices care for cancer patients and/or their caregivers or families could be effective in reducing infection rates.IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: This systematic review addressed the teaching-learning programs for preventing and controlling infections associated with lo...

Myocardial Infarction in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia: Results from Nationwide Readmission Database
Conclusion This analysis showed no statistically significant difference in mortality, 30-day readmission, and complication rates post PCI between CML and non-CML patients. However, interestingly, CML patients may experience lower coronary artery dissection and ischemic stroke rates than those without CML diagnosis.PMID:38705141 | DOI:10.1159/000539149 (Source: Oncology)

Efficacy of Probiotic supplements on Parkinson's Disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, based on the overall results of the available RCTs studies, our results suggested the potential value of probiotics in improving constipation symptoms in PD patients. Therefore, probiotics may be one of the adjuvant therapy for PD-related constipation patients. The findings of this study provide more proof supporting the effectiveness of probiotics, encouraging probiotics to be utilized alone or in combination with other therapies in clinical practice for PD patients. However, more well-designed RCTs with large sample sizes are required.PMID:38705493 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctim.2024.103045 (Source: Com...

Tailored multivalent peptide targeting the B-subunit pentamer of cholera toxin inhibits its intestinal toxicity by inducing aberrant transport of the toxin in cells
Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2024 Apr 26;716:149991. doi: 10.1016/j.bbrc.2024.149991. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCholera toxin (Ctx) is a major virulence factor produced by Vibrio cholerae that can cause gastrointestinal diseases, including severe watery diarrhea and dehydration, in humans. Ctx binds to target cells through multivalent interactions between its B-subunit pentamer and the receptor ganglioside GM1 present on the cell surface. Here, we identified a series of tetravalent peptides that specifically bind to the receptor-binding region of the B-subunit pentamer using affinity-based screening of multivalent rando...

GEHGAN: CircRNA-disease association prediction via graph embedding and heterogeneous graph attention network
Comput Biol Chem. 2024 Apr 25;110:108079. doi: 10.1016/j.compbiolchem.2024.108079. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere is growing proof suggested that circRNAs play a crucial function in diverse important biological reactions related to human diseases. Within the area of biochemistry, a massive range of wet experiments have been carried out to find out the connections of circRNA-disease in recent years. Since wet experiments are expensive and laborious, nowadays, calculation-based solutions have increasingly attracted the attention of researchers. However, the performance of these methods is restricted due to the inability...
