In the Pursuit of Mental Well-being: Robert H. Felix and His Role in the Establishment of Mental Health in America
Dr. Lee ’ s talk will address mental well-being in mid-20th century America. Realizing the necessity of a comprehensive plan for mental health in the U.S. after World War II, the discipline of psychiatry found themselves unprepared for the new blueprint. To overcome the long-existing limits, psychiatry needed to transform its old look which had seemingly been esoteric, institution-based, and even unscientific. The National Mental Health Act of 1946 was a striking signal to break away from its unpopular image of discipline. Robert H. Felix, the first director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), was one of t...

Burning Contagion: Organized Arson in Response to Quarantine Facilities and Pest Houses, 1858-1901
Throughout the 19th century, communities in the United States committed arson against healthcare facilities that housed the diseased. Local and national newspapers often described the resulting damage as the actions of a “ lawless mob. ” A closer reading of these incidents reveals local communities put at risk by facilities that actively caused them harm while benefitting other parties. This talk suggests that these events were organized acts of self-defense borne of medical knowledge, rather than rash mobs acting through fear or ignorance, and will highlight two such incidents, one in Staten Island, New York and anoth...

Visionary Technology: Exploring Eyeglasses and Impairment in the NLM ’ s Collections
Join Dr. Rachael Gillibrand as she explores the connections between eye impairments and the creation of eyeglasses, using the collections of the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The talk will highlight items from her 'ocular impairment' resource collection, accessible through the Medical Heritage Library, as well as materials used in her forthcoming book on premodern disability. Together, we will dive into the pages of historical texts, including Guy de Chauliac's Chyrurgia, Bartholomeus Anglicus' De proprietatibus rerum and the writings of Ambroise Par é , to explore how ocular health has influenced the design of eyeg...

Empowerment of Under-represented Researchers: “ Leading Large NIH-Funded Consortiums: (Lots of) Lessons Learned from the 1st Year of the Bridge2AI Program
The Bridge2AI program funded its firsts consortiums for data generation projects in 2022 with the goal of building large-scale multimodal databases that are ethically-sourced and AI-ready to fuel AI research. Gathering multi-disciplinary team science is not an easy task and many challenges in terms of social engineering need to be addressed and navigated to obtain tangible results. Dr. Bensoussan will share her experience in co-leading the Bridge2AI-Voice Consortium in its first year of funding and review “ do's and don't ’ s ” of Team Science. For more information go tohttps://www.cc.nih.gov/centerio/women_leaders.ht...

IIG Seminar - MHC-II heterozygosity limits T1D susceptibility through non-cognate negative selection.
The ability of T cells to distinguish highly similar peptide ligands bound to a specific class of MHC proteins is the underlying basis for a functioning adaptive immune system. Why TCRs - which are structurally very similar to antibodies - only bind MHC proteins is poorly understood. The Huseby lab is focused on the molecular and cellular pathways that govern the generation, maintenance and function of a self-tolerant T cell repertoire and the autoimmune consequences of self-tolerance failure. To understand how T cell repertoires develop and how defects in the process lead to autoimmune disease, Dr. Huseby ’ s group has ...

NIH Director's Seminar - Addressing evolving and emerging public health questions with descriptive epidemiology
NIH Director's Seminar Series Well-conducted surveillance studies have long informed hypotheses related to the causes of cancer, highlighted the population-level impact of exposures and interventions and guided additional research, prevention efforts and public health resources. The Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has been generating etiologic clues from monitoring cancer trends and mapping cancer mortality for decades. In this lecture, Dr. Shiels will describe her research program, which utilizes a combination of innovative contemporary approaches to confront high...
