Epigenetic Changes Induced by Pathogenic Chlamydia Spp
Pathog Dis. 2023 Nov 29:ftad034. doi: 10.1093/femspd/ftad034. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChlamydia trachomatis, C. pneumoniae, and C. psittaci, the three Chlamydia species known to cause human disease, have been collectively linked to several pathologies, including conjunctivitis, trachoma, respiratory disease, acute and chronic urogenital infections and their complications, and psittacosis. In vitro, animal, and human studies also established additional correlations, such as between C. pneumoniae and atherosclerosis and between C. trachomatis and ovarian cancer. As part of their survival and pathogenesis strategies as ...

Ocular disorders in non-invasive ventilation and CPAP therapy-A case report
DISCUSSION: Ocular disorders in relation with NIV are more common than documented in clinical practice. It's essential that every professional that deals with this type of therapy is sensitive to the recognition and early diagnosis of this secondary effect, motivating timely evaluation. This case exemplifies the rapid onset of this type of complication, especially if the staff is poorly trained in NIV application and in patients with a decreased level of consciousness. Centers need to develop protocols to evaluate patients under NIV for ocular symptoms, with the goal of early therapeutic intervention. The creation and divu...

Clinical features of 26 cases of COVID-19-associated conjunctivitis
ConclusionsCOVID-19-associated conjunctivitis is rare in the elderly and strongly associated with a history of smoking. It often occurs in the early stages of infection, and while hyperemia is recognized as a clinical symptom, other ocular symptoms are rare or non-existent. Many cases recover within a short time. Unique Attributes of Guinea Pigs as New Models to Study Ocular Herpes Pathophysiology and Recurrence
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the potential suitability of guinea pigs as new models for ocular HSV-1 investigations, filling a critical preclinical void of models capable of showcasing spontaneous HSV reactivation in the eye. The observed similarities and differences in the reactions of guinea pigs and rabbits to HSV-1 infection and treatments provide crucial insights, laying the foundation for future studies on ocular HSV pathogenesis, latency, and improved treatment options.PMID:38015175 | DOI:10.1167/iovs.64.14.41 (Source: Herpes)

Air pollutants contribute to epithelial barrier dysfunction and allergic diseases
Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol. 2023 Nov 23:S1081-1206(23)01462-X. doi: 10.1016/j.anai.2023.11.014. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAir pollution is a global problem associated with various health conditions, resulting in elevated rates of morbidity and mortality. Major sources of air pollutants include industrial emissions, traffic-related pollutants, and household biomass combustion, as well as indoor pollutants from chemicals and tobacco. Various types of air pollutants originate from both human activities and natural sources. This includes particulate matter (PM), pollen, greenhouse gases, and other harmful gases. Air pollut...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 2301: Monkeypox Virus Immune Evasion and Eye Manifestation: Beyond Eyelid Implications
rez A. S. Quaresma Monkeypox virus (MPXV), belonging to the Poxviridae family and Orthopoxvirus genus, is closely related to the smallpox virus. Initial prodromal symptoms typically include headache, fever, and lymphadenopathy. This review aims to detail various ocular manifestations and immune evasion associated with the monkeypox viral infection and its complications, making it appropriate as a narrative review. Common external ocular manifestations of MPXV typically involve a generalized pustular rash, keratitis, discharges, and dried secretions related to conjunctival pustules, photophobia, and lacrimation. Orthopo...

Asymptomatic stones in the lacrimal canaliculus
In this study, we present a case with the presence of several stones within the inferior lacrimal canaliculus. A female patient, aged 74, appeared with bilateral senile cataracts and was scheduled for cataract surgery. During a standard ocular examination, it was observed that the tear meniscus height in the left eye had a greater magnitude compared with the right eye. Canaliculitis with dacryolith was verified using a series of diagnostic procedures, including physical inspection, fluorescent dye disappearance test, palpation, 50  Mhz ultrasound biomicroscope scan, and irrigation of the lacrimal canaliculi. Upon surgica...

Fatal Human Neurologic Infection Caused by Pigeon Avian Paramyxovirus-1, Australia
We report a fatal case of neurologic disease in a 2-year-old immunocompromised child in Australia. Metagenomic sequencing and histopathology identified the causative agent as the pigeon variant of APMV-1. This diagnosis should be considered in neurologic conditions of undefined etiologies. Agnostic metagenomic sequencing methods are useful in such settings to direct diagnostic and therapeutic efforts.PMID:37987582 | DOI:10.3201/eid2912.230250 (Source: Emerging Infectious Diseases)
