Scleritis following intravitreal brolucizumab injection: a case series
ConclusionsIntraocular inflammation following IVBr injection may progress to the posterior segment. Scleritis can occur after IVBr injection, and topical eye drops alone may not be sufficient for initial treatment. Clinicians should consider the possibility of scleritis in patients with worsening inflammation after IVBr injection. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

Residential exposure to mold, dampness, and indoor air pollution and risk of respiratory tract infections: a study among children ages 11 and 12 in the Danish National Birth Cohort
ConclusionResidential exposures, in particular to mold and dampness and to a lesser degree to indoor combustion sources, are related to the occurrence of RTIs in children. (Source: European Journal of Epidemiology)

GSE230575 Dupilumab-associated head and neck dermatitis shows a pronounced type 22 immune signature mediated by oligoclonally expanded T cells
Conclusions: Taken together, we demonstrate that dupilumab effectively dampens conventional type 2 inflammation in DAHND lesions, with concomitant hyperactivation of _IL22_-associated responses. (Source: GEO: Gene Expression Omnibus)

Real-World Experience in the Use of Immunosuppression for the Management of Inflammatory Eye Disease
CONCLUSION: Progressive conditions, such as cicatrising conjunctivitis may require lifelong immunosuppression, but patients with NIU and Scleritis and those on CTSS, immunosuppression withdrawal should be considered if they remain in remission for 2 years. Any patient stopping a medication should be contacted immediately for counselling. These data will better inform patients, encourage adherence and aide formal guideline development.PMID:38349962 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2024.2311743 (Source: Ocular Immunology and Inflammation)

Outcomes after corneal crosslinking treatment in paediatric patients with keratoconus
ConclusionThe findings suggest that accelerated corneal crosslinking treatment is effective in slowing or halting the progression of keratoconus. Furthermore, there were no persistent overt complications observed at 12  months after the procedure. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Ocular Gene Therapy in a Patient with Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa
N Engl J Med. 2024 Feb 8;390(6):530-535. doi: 10.1056/NEJMoa2301244.ABSTRACTDystrophic epidermolysis bullosa is a rare genetic disease caused by damaging variants in COL7A1, which encodes type VII collagen. Blistering and scarring of the ocular surface develop, potentially leading to blindness. Beremagene geperpavec (B-VEC) is a replication-deficient herpes simplex virus type 1-based gene therapy engineered to deliver functional human type VII collagen. Here, we report the case of a patient with cicatrizing conjunctivitis in both eyes caused by dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa who received ophthalmic administration of B-VE...

Actinic conjunctivitis and its relationship with prurigo in an indigenous population from the Highlands of Chiapas, Mexico
ConclusionsAC may be the initial or sole manifestation of AP. Most AC cases (87%) were initially observed at the advanced stages of the disease. Although solar exposure was not associated with late AC stages, a positive association was found with farm animal exposure. Evaporative dry eye associated with meibomian gland dysfunction has not been previously reported in patients with AC. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Podcast on Cross-speciality Perspectives on Practical Management of Atopic Dermatitis-Associated Ocular Surface Diseases
AbstractThere is a growing awareness among dermatology providers of ocular comorbidities in patients with the chronic inflammatory skin disease atopic dermatitis (AD). For example, the prevalence of ocular surface diseases (OSD) such as conjunctivitis is higher in patients with AD than in the general population, and the use of some AD treatments may be associated with OSD. In a recent review published in the  Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, dermatologists and ophthalmologists provided an overview of the different types, etiology, pathophysiology, and practical management of OSD associated with AD. This rev...

Ocular Lichen Planus: A clinicopathologic review
Eur J Ophthalmol. 2024 Feb 2:11206721241229128. doi: 10.1177/11206721241229128. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLichen planus is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis that can affect the skin, mucous membranes and nails. Cutaneous lichen planus lesions are best described by the "six Ps" - purple pruritic polygonal planar papules and plaques. Mucous membrane lesions are commonly associated with cutaneous lichen planus. Ocular involvement with lichen planus is rare and conjunctival involvement usually predominates, it can however be visually devastating. Ocular lichen planus often progresses to extensive conjunctival scarring whic...

Dupilumab-induced Conjunctivitis In Atopic Dermatitis Patients Is Associated To An Increase Of Proinflammatory Molecules In Tears.
Dupilumab (DU) is an effective treatment in both atopic dermatitis (AD) and T2 asthma (AS) patients, but is associated to ocular surface alterations in AD subjects only. This side effect might be associated to differences in the immunological infiltration. We investigate the clinical and immunological features in tears of DU-associated conjunctivitis.
