The effect of COVID-19 infection on patients with rheumatic diseases in China
ConclusionsAfter the COVID-19 outbreak in China, the proportion of patients with rheumatic diseases infected with the virus was similar to that of normal individuals. But the clinical symptoms, follow-up treatment requirements, and awareness of the COVID-19 among rheumatic patients were distinct from those among non-rheumatic patients, necessitating the use of individualized diagnosis and treatment plans as well as health advice by medical professionals in clinical work.Key Points• Despite there were different comorbidities and vaccination rates, the rate of COVID-19 infection in patients with rheumatic disease was simil...

Moraxella ovis and Moraxella bovoculi lipooligosaccharide biosynthesis genes, and structural characterisation of oligosaccharide from M. ovis 354T
Carbohydr Res. 2024 Jan 24;536:109043. doi: 10.1016/j.carres.2024.109043. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMoraxella ovis is a Gram-negative bacterium isolated from sheep conjunctivitis cases and is a rare isolate of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). This species is closely related to M. bovoculi, another species which can also be isolated from IBK, or cattle upper respiratory tract (URT). Prior to molecular identification techniques, M. bovoculi was frequently misclassified as M. ovis. We previously described the structure of two oligosaccharides (lipooligosaccharide-derived, minor and major glycoforms) from M. b...

Glucocorticoid-Induced Ocular Hypertension: Origins and New Approaches to Minimize
Expert Rev Ophthalmol. 2020;15(3):145-157. doi: 10.1080/17469899.2020.1762488. Epub 2020 May 14.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Glucocorticoids (GCs) have unique actions in their combined anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive activities and are among the most commonly-prescribed drugs, particularly for inflammatory conditions. They are often used clinically to treat inflammatory eye diseases like uveitis, optic neuritis, conjunctivitis, keratitis and others, but are often accompanied by side effects, like ocular hypertension that can be vision threatening.AREAS COVERED: The review will focus on the complex molecular mechanism of a...

Gender differences in trachomatous scarring prevalence in a formerly trachoma hyperendemic district in Tanzania
Conclusions/SignificanceOverall scarring prevalence and more severe scarring prevalence was higher in females compared to males, even adjusting for age and community TF prevalence. The data suggest that processes occur that lead to women preferentially progressing towards more severe scarring compared to men. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Is it in their eyes? Correlation between microorganisms isolated from bronchial aspirates and conjunctival swabs in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates a strong concordance between the isolated microorganisms from both samples in patients presenting clear symptoms of clinical conjunctivitis. These findings provide a basis for future prospective studies that may leverage conjunctival swabs as a predictive tool for identifying microorganisms involved in respiratory infections.PMID:38258553 | DOI:10.37201/req/116.2023 (Source: Revista Espanola de Quimioterapia)

Rare Case of Tularemia With Preauricular Lymphadenopathy and Conjunctivitis in a 27-Year-Old Male Patient in Germany
Ear Nose Throat J. 2024 Jan 21:1455613231226046. doi: 10.1177/01455613231226046. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTularemia is a rare disease but shows an approximately 10-fold increase in reported cases over the last 15 years in Germany. Clinical symptoms of acute tularemia infection are various, which often delays diagnosis. This case report gives an overview of the clinical manifestations of acute tularemia and shows the importance of interdisciplinary work to shorten the time from the onset of symptoms to effective treatment in infection with Francisella tularensis. Since some cases of tularemia are life-threatening, earl...
