Opiate-reduction protocol for common outpatient spinal procedures: a long-term feasibility study and single-center experience
CONCLUSIONS: A standardized discharge protocol for postoperative outpatient spinal procedures can lead to long-term reductions in opioid discharge quantity, without compromising patient safety or increasing the utilization of hospital resources through readmissions, refill requests, or clinic phone calls. This study provides an example of a feasible and effective discharge prescription regimen that may be generalizable to common outpatient neurosurgical procedures with long-term evidence that a small intervention can lead to ongoing reduced quantities of postoperative opioids at the time of discharge.PMID:38669713 | DOI:10...

Prevalence and associated factors of non-traumatic knee pain in high school volleyball players: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Factors associated with knee pain include a history of LBP and reduced flexibility on the heel-buttock distance test. The study highlights the need for a comprehensive approach, considering the coexistence of LBP and focusing on improving anterior thigh flexibility.PMID:38669135 | DOI:10.1080/00913847.2024.2348439 (Source: The Physician and Sportsmedicine Online)

Development and content validity of the caregiver assisted transfer technique instrument
Assist Technol. 2024 Apr 26:1-9. doi: 10.1080/10400435.2024.2336334. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInformal caregivers often provide transfer assistance to individuals with disabilities; however, repeated transfers are associated with a high risk of musculoskeletal pain and injury, and training and education around transfers is minimal. The purpose of this study was to develop and assess the content validity of a new tool, the Caregiver Assisted Transfer Technique Instrument (CATT), which could be used to provide an objective indicator of transfer performance. Item importance, clarity, and appropriateness of responses were...

Aspergillus Endogenous Endophthalmitis as a Clue to Identifying a Delayed Lumbosacral Osteomyelitis
CONCLUSION: This case highlights the atypical progression of Aspergillus-induced endogenous endophthalmitis to delayed lumbosacral osteomyelitis in an immunocompetent individual. It highlights the crucial role of a meticulous medical history examination and interdisciplinary collaboration in diagnosing and managing diseases, especially in cases with atypical presentations.PMID:38668792 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2024.2344704 (Source: Ocular Immunology and Inflammation)

Efficacy of local infiltration analgesia on recovery after total hip arthroplasty using direct anterior approach under spinal anaesthesia: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Acta Orthop Belg. 2024 Mar;90(1):11-15. doi: 10.52628/90.1.12345.ABSTRACTThe utilization of local infiltration analgesia (LIA) is a common practice in total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures to mitigate postoperative pain and diminish the necessity for opioids. However, contemporary literature reports conflicting results. Our working hypothesis was that LIA renders better postoperative VAS-scores and reduces the need for oral analgetics. We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial aimed at examining the effectiveness of LIA in THA. A total of 90 patients were included for statistical analysis. Our pri...

Nontraumatic orbital hematoma secondary to labor and childbirth: a case report and review of the literature
ConclusionsNon-traumatic orbital hematomas associated with maternal labor are rare and likely related to increased valsalva during delivery and heightened blood volume in pregnancy. Neuro-imaging and systemic workup are recommended to assess for vascular anomalies or underlying coagulopathies. The overall prognosis is favorable with most having full recovery. Investigating Cervical Flexion-Relaxation Ratio in Subjects with Cervical Lateral Spinal Stenosis Compared with Asymptomatic Controls: a case control study
The cervical flexion-relaxation ratio (FRR) is known as a quantitative measure of the ability of the cervical extensor muscles to relax during the full flexion of the cervical spine. Compared with subjects suffering from non-specific neck pain, the changes occurring in the pattern of the neck muscles' functions in cases with cervical spinal stenosis are not yet well understood. Therefore, this study aimed to compare cervical FRR in subjects with cervical lateral spinal stenosis and asymptomatic controls. (Source: Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies)

Cutibacterium Acnes in Spine Surgery: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) previously named Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) has been increasingly recognized by spine surgeons as a cause of indolent post-surgical spinal infection. Patients infected with C acnes may present with pseudarthrosis or nonspecific back pain. Currently, microbiological tissue cultures remain the gold standard in diagnosing C. acnes infection. Ongoing research into using genetic sequencing as a diagnostic method shows promising results and may be another future way of diagnosis. (Source: The Spine Journal)

Development and Validation of a Radiomics-Based Model for Predicting Osteoporosis in Patients with Lumbar Compression Fractures
Osteoporosis, a metabolic bone disorder, markedly elevates fracture risks, with vertebral compression fractures being predominant. Antiosteoporotic treatments for patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF) lessen both the occurrence of subsequent fractures and associated pain. Thus, diagnosing osteoporosis in OVCF patients is vital. (Source: The Spine Journal)
