Differential relationships between physical activity and pain phenotypes in individuals with spinal cord injury
CONCLUSION: Differential relationships exist between pain phenotypes and MVPA in individuals with SCI. Pain location differed between the subgroups of nociceptive pain, which we presume may indicate the presence of nociplastic pain in some individuals. These results may contribute to the advancement of personalized pain management by targeting non-pharmacological interventions for specific pain phenotypes.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT05236933..PMID:38661677 | DOI:10.1080/10790268.2024.2344315 (Source: Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine)

Macrophage: A key player in neuropathic pain
Int Rev Immunol. 2024 Apr 25:1-14. doi: 10.1080/08830185.2024.2344170. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTResearch on the relationship between macrophages and neuropathic pain has flourished in the past two decades. It has long been believed that macrophages are strong immune effector cells that play well-established roles in tissue homeostasis and lesions, such as promoting the initiation and progression of tissue injury and improving wound healing and tissue remodeling in a variety of pathogenesis-related diseases. They are also heterogeneous and versatile cells that can switch phenotypically/functionally in response to the m...

Trajectories of health-related quality of life following road trauma: Latent growth mixture modeling across a 12-month cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlighted the heterogeneity of HRQoL trajectories following RT injury and the importance of considering differences between characteristics of survivors. In addition to injury type and severity, outcome is related to demographic factors, pre-injury health and pre-injury psychological factors.PMID:38663274 | DOI:10.1016/j.aap.2024.107574 (Source: Accident; Analysis and Prevention.)

Surgeon Perceptions of Performing Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion in an Ambulatory Surgical Center vs Hospital Setting in the Elderly Population: Results of a Surgeon Survey
CONCLUSION: Our survey data show that surgeons' perceptions of current CMS rules and regulations may hinder the transition into the ASC setting because they think the reimbursement is too low and the regulatory burden is too high. ASCs have disproportionally higher initial acquisition and ongoing costs related to staff training and maintenance of the TLIF technology that CMS should consider when determining the appropriate financial remuneration for these complex procedures.CLINICAL RELEVANCE: ASC offers a viable and attractive option for their TLIF procedure with the advantage of same-day discharge and at-home recovery.PM...

The Qi of Body, Mind, and Spirit: A Contextual Perspective on the Elusive Nature of Qi
CONCLUSIONS: Qi-nature can vary among gross, subtle, and causal levels. These levels can coexist and overlap during treatments of patients. This tripartite explanation may represent the Oriental pictograms better and be consistent with the philosophical root of Chinese Medicine-the Tao.PMID:38659729 | PMC:PMC11036150 | DOI:10.1089/acu.2023.0071 (Source: Acupuncture in Medicine)

Prevalence of endoscopy-related injuries and their impact on clinical practice: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion ERIs, including carpal tunnel syndrome, de Quervain’s tenosynovitis, and endoscopy-related pain, are very common. These injuries can be severe, requiring surgery, and lead to loss of productivity. Most gastroenterologists report an unmet need for training in the proper ergonomics of endoscopy. Cervical spine immobilisation following blunt trauma in pre-hospital and emergency care: A systematic review
ConclusionsDespite the limited evidence, weak designs and limited generalisability, the available data suggest that pre-hospital cervical spine immobilisation (full immobilisation or movement minimisation) was of uncertain value due to the lack of demonstrable benefit and may lead to potential complications and adverse outcomes. High-quality randomised comparative studies are required to address this important question.
