Feedback Sought on Cephalopod Care and Use
Cephalopods are aquatic invertebrate animals that include octopuses, squid, cuttlefish, and nautiluses. Earlier this month, we released a Request for Information (NOT-OD-23-176) seeking public input on the humane care and use of laboratory cephalopods at Assured institutions.   The proposed guidance acknowledges the evidence suggesting these animals would benefit from oversight, but also that there are not yet specific care and use standards to allow them to be regulated under the Public Health Service Policy for the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (PHS Policy). Instead, the U.S. Government Principles p...

HEAL Initiative: Translational Development of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Devices (R18 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Funding Opportunity RFA-EB-22-002 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to develop clinical-grade prototypes intended for use as safe, effective, and non-addictive device-based technologies and approaches to treat pain. The goal of the program is to demonstrate treatment using credible neural targets for device-based interventions and/or diagnostics for pain, building upon the latest mechanistic knowledge about the anatomy and physiology of central, spinal, and peripheral pathways involved in pain. Awarded activities will facilitate the translation of ...

Year in Reflection 2018
Suppose I offer you a bet based on a coin toss: you win $150 if the coin lands on heads, but you lose $100 if the coin lands on tails.  Will you take the bet?  Think for a second before reading on. If you think this through objectively, of course you should take the bet.  There’s a 50% chance you will win $150 and a 50% chance you will lose $100 – the “expected value” of taking the bet is that you’ll be ahead by $25.  (Here’s the math: 0.50*150 + 0.50*(-100) = 75 – 50 = 25).  Yet the reality is that most people (maybe you too?) will decline.  Most people consider the hurt ...

Heal Initiative: Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial of Acupuncture for Management of Chronic Low Back Pain in Older Adults (UG3/UH3 Clinical Trial Required)
Funding Opportunity RFA-AT-19-005 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages UG3/UH3 phased cooperative research applications to conduct an efficient, large-scale pragmatic trial or implementation science study to evaluate the impact of and how best to implement acupuncture treatment for chronic low back pain into health care delivery. Awards made under this FOA will initially support a one-year milestone-driven planning phase (UG3), with possible transition to an implementation phase (UH3). UG3 projects that have met the scientific milestone and feasibility requi...
