Opiate-reduction protocol for common outpatient spinal procedures: a long-term feasibility study and single-center experience
CONCLUSIONS: A standardized discharge protocol for postoperative outpatient spinal procedures can lead to long-term reductions in opioid discharge quantity, without compromising patient safety or increasing the utilization of hospital resources through readmissions, refill requests, or clinic phone calls. This study provides an example of a feasible and effective discharge prescription regimen that may be generalizable to common outpatient neurosurgical procedures with long-term evidence that a small intervention can lead to ongoing reduced quantities of postoperative opioids at the time of discharge.PMID:38669713 | DOI:10...

Long-term efficacy of microendoscopic laminotomy for lumbar spinal stenosis in advanced degenerative spondylolisthesis with or without dynamic spinal instability: a propensity score-matching analysis
CONCLUSIONS: MEL may have good long-term results in patients with DS without dynamic instability. Women with dynamic instability may require additional fusion surgery in approximately 25% of cases for a period of ≥ 5 years.PMID:38669704 | DOI:10.3171/2024.2.SPINE231075 (Source: Journal of Neurosurgery.Spine)

Prevalence and associated factors of non-traumatic knee pain in high school volleyball players: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Factors associated with knee pain include a history of LBP and reduced flexibility on the heel-buttock distance test. The study highlights the need for a comprehensive approach, considering the coexistence of LBP and focusing on improving anterior thigh flexibility.PMID:38669135 | DOI:10.1080/00913847.2024.2348439 (Source: The Physician and Sportsmedicine Online)

Analgesic Mechanism of Dexmedetomidine and Esketamine in Rats with Spinal Cord Injury
CONCLUSIONS: Treatment using DEX combined with ESK improves the motor function, inhibits inflammation and astrocyte activity, and exerts analgesic effects on rats with SCI. These findings can serve as a reference for the selection of multi-modal analgesics.PMID:38665020 | DOI:10.24976/Discov.Med.202436183.67 (Source: Discovery Medicine)

Development and content validity of the caregiver assisted transfer technique instrument
Assist Technol. 2024 Apr 26:1-9. doi: 10.1080/10400435.2024.2336334. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInformal caregivers often provide transfer assistance to individuals with disabilities; however, repeated transfers are associated with a high risk of musculoskeletal pain and injury, and training and education around transfers is minimal. The purpose of this study was to develop and assess the content validity of a new tool, the Caregiver Assisted Transfer Technique Instrument (CATT), which could be used to provide an objective indicator of transfer performance. Item importance, clarity, and appropriateness of responses were...

Aspergillus Endogenous Endophthalmitis as a Clue to Identifying a Delayed Lumbosacral Osteomyelitis
CONCLUSION: This case highlights the atypical progression of Aspergillus-induced endogenous endophthalmitis to delayed lumbosacral osteomyelitis in an immunocompetent individual. It highlights the crucial role of a meticulous medical history examination and interdisciplinary collaboration in diagnosing and managing diseases, especially in cases with atypical presentations.PMID:38668792 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2024.2344704 (Source: Ocular Immunology and Inflammation)

Efficacy of local infiltration analgesia on recovery after total hip arthroplasty using direct anterior approach under spinal anaesthesia: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Acta Orthop Belg. 2024 Mar;90(1):11-15. doi: 10.52628/90.1.12345.ABSTRACTThe utilization of local infiltration analgesia (LIA) is a common practice in total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures to mitigate postoperative pain and diminish the necessity for opioids. However, contemporary literature reports conflicting results. Our working hypothesis was that LIA renders better postoperative VAS-scores and reduces the need for oral analgetics. We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial aimed at examining the effectiveness of LIA in THA. A total of 90 patients were included for statistical analysis. Our pri...

Study on the biodynamic characteristics and internal vibration behaviors of a seated human body under biomechanical characteristics
Biomech Model Mechanobiol. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.1007/s10237-024-01849-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo provide reference and theoretical guidance for establishing human body dynamics models and studying biomechanical vibration behavior, this study aimed to develop and verify a computational model of a three-dimensional seated human body with detailed anatomical structure under complex biomechanical characteristics to investigate dynamic characteristics and internal vibration behaviors of the human body. Fifty modes of a seated human body were extracted by modal method. The intervertebral disc and head motions under unia...

Euchromatin histone-lysine N-methyltransferase 2 regulates the expression of potassium-sodium-activated channel subfamily T member 1 in primary sensory neurons and contributes to remifentanil-induced pain sensitivity
This study investigates whether G9a regulates the potassium sodium-activated channel subfamily T member 1 (Slo2.2) in remifentanil-induced post-incisional hyperalgesia (RIH) in rodents. We performed remifentanil infusion (1μg·kg-1·min-1 for 60min) followed by plantar incision to induce RIH in rodents. Our results showed that RIH was accompanied by increased G9a and H3K9me2 production and decreased Slo2.2 expression 48h postoperatively. Deletion of G9a rescued Slo2.2 expression in DRG and reduced RIH intensity. Slo2.2 overexpression also reversed this hyperalgesia phenotype. G9a overexpression decreased Slo2.2-mediated l...

McArdle's disease revealed by acute low back pain
We report the case of a 17-year-old male patient who was referred to the emergency department for the management of acute inflammatory low back pain, without traumatic context, associated with an increase of CK at 66,336 UI/L (N<192UI/L) and a CRP at 202mg/L. The immunological assessment was negative and the spinal MRI showed images in favor of necrotizing fasciitis affecting the erector spinae muscles, among others. Faced with the description of difficulties in practicing physical activities since childhood and a non-ischaemic forearm exercise test showing no elevation in lactacidemia, genetic tests were carried out, f...
