WHO redefines airborne transmission: what does that mean for future pandemics?
Nature, Published online: 24 April 2024; doi:10.1038/d41586-024-01173-7The World Health Organization was criticized for being too slow to classify COVID-19 as airborne. Will the new terminology help next time? (Source: Nature AOP)

The contributions of vaccination and natural infection to the production of neutralizing antibodies against the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) prototype strain and variants
The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel coronavirus responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic [1-3]. As the pandemic progressed, new, more transmissible but less virulent variants, like the Omicron variant, emerged and became more dominant, further reducing the mortality rate [4-8]. The World Health Organization (WHO) eventually declared that the COVID-19 pandemic no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern on May 2023 [9]. Professional Societies in Surgical Infection Care
Prevention of surgical site infection (SSI) is a key charge for surgeons. The use of perioperative antibiotics is based on evidence. Still, other elements of the SSI prevention bundle, such as hair clipping, have not demonstrated efficacy in prospective trials. Many surgeons have adopted wound irrigation or wound protector use, as these practices are specifically designed to reduce bacterial load at the surgical wound site, and their decontaminating and barrier effects intuitively seem to make sense as preventive measures. The World Health Organization has endorsed the use of wound protectors for intraoperative SSI prevent...

Reforms and innovations in primary health care in different countries: scoping review
CONCLUSION: The necessity and importance of strengthening PHC is obvious to everyone due to its great consequences, which requires a lot of will, effort, and coordination at the macro-level of the country, various organizations, and health teams, as well as the participation of people and society.PMID:38651337 | DOI:10.1017/S1463423623000725 (Source: Primary Care)

Azole resistance mechanisms and population structure of the human pathogen < em > Aspergillus fumigatus < /em > on retail plant products
Appl Environ Microbiol. 2024 Apr 23:e0205623. doi: 10.1128/aem.02056-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous saprotroph and human-pathogenic fungus that is life-threatening to the immunocompromised. Triazole-resistant A. fumigatus was found in patients without prior treatment with azoles, leading researchers to conclude that resistance had developed in agricultural environments where azoles are used against plant pathogens. Previous studies have documented azole-resistant A. fumigatus across agricultural environments, but few have looked at retail plant products. Our objectives were to deter...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 519: Reduction of Malnutrition Related to Unsafe Water Consumption in Developing Countries: Potabilization of Surface Water and Traditional Well Water, with Plant Extracts
The objective of this study was to evaluate and optimize the capacity of four local plant extracts in the potabilization of unsafe water. Thus, Moringa oleifera and Boscia senegalensis seeds, or Aloe vera and Opuntia ficus-indica mucilages were prepared in a solution and applied during a jar test as biocoagulants and bioflocculants on three raw water samples of 82.3 NTU, 549.8 NTU and 796.9 NTU. After treatment results showed that 0.9 g/L of Moringa biocoagulant or 1 g/L of Boscia biocoagulant applied with 0.4 mL of Aloe vera bioflocculant or 0.6 mL of Opuntia ficus-indica bioflocculant reduced the turbidity of each water ...

Current Progress, Challenges and Prospects in the Development of COVID-19 Vaccines
AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in over 772 million confirmed cases, including nearly 7 million deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Leveraging rapid development, accelerated vaccine approval processes, and large-scale production of various COVID-19 vaccines using different technical platforms, the WHO declared an end to the global health emergency of COVID-19 on May 5, 2023. Current COVID-19 vaccines encompass inactivated, live attenuated, viral vector, protein subunit, nucleic acid (DNA and RNA), and virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines. However, the efficacy of these vaccines is diminishing...

Management of burns
Burns represent a huge global economic and social burden produced by the severity of the injuries and the highly resource intensive treatment  and rehabilitation required. The World Health Organization (WHO) is aiming to reduce this with a program of education, burns prevention and first aid measures. Assessment of the size and depth of a burn is paramount to determine the treatment each burn will require but can be challenging even fo r experts. Many developed countries have set up regional networks to centralize burns services but in the event of a major incident involving significant burns it is likely that these ser...

A genetic profiling guideline to support diagnosis and clinical management of lymphomas
AbstractThe new lymphoma classifications (International Consensus Classification of Mature Lymphoid Neoplasms, and 5th World Health Organization Classification of Lymphoid Neoplasms) include genetics as an integral part of lymphoma diagnosis, allowing better lymphoma subclassification, patient risk stratification, and prediction of treatment response. Lymphomas are characterized by very few recurrent and disease-specific mutations, and most entities have a heterogenous genetic landscape with a long tail of recurrently mutated genes. Most of these occur at low frequencies, reflecting the clinical heterogeneity of lymphomas....

Ultrasound and cytopathological characteristics of thyroid tumours of uncertain malignant potential - from diagnosis to treatment
CONCLUSIONS: The study indicates that lesions with uncertain malignant potential typically present features suggesting low to intermediate risk of malignancy based on EU-TIRADS-PL classification, with dominant cytopathologic Bethesda IV category. However, 20% of lesions were assessed tas EU-TIRADS-PL category 5. Low-risk tumours, including NIFTP, FT-UMP, and WDT-UMP, require careful observation and monitoring post surgical treatment due to their potential for recurrence and metastasis. The preoperatively prediction of borderline tumour may play an important role in proper treatment and follow-up.PMID:38646986 | DOI:10.5603...

Music as a determinant of health among First Nations people in Australia: A scoping narrative review
CONCLUSION: While many recent studies identify the impact of First Nations' expressive practices broadly, they miss important features of First Nations music as a potentially unique cultural, social, political and ecological determinant of health. SO WHAT?: There is an opportunity for future research and health determinant modelling to explicitly examine the role of First Nations music and other creative practices for social and emotional well-being.PMID:38649338 | DOI:10.1002/hpja.865 (Source: Health Promotion Journal of Australia)
