Update in lean metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease
CONCLUSION: MASLD is a complex disease comprising epigenetic, genetic, and metabolic factors in its pathogenesis. Results vary across populations, gender, and age. Limited data exists on clinical practice guidelines for lean patients. Future studies employing this new nomenclature can contribute to standardizing and generalizing results among lean patients with steatotic liver disease.PMID:38577539 | PMC:PMC10989317 | DOI:10.4254/wjh.v16.i3.452 (Source: World Journal of Hepatology)

Risk factors associated with severe COVID-19 outcomes in Jamaica: a cross-sectional study of national surveillance data
CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this cross-sectional analysis indicate that confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Jamaica were more likely to be female and younger individuals, whereas COVID-19 deaths occurred more frequently in males and older individuals. There is increased risk of poor COVID-19 outcomes beginning at age 40, with males disproportionately affected. COVID-19 death also varied by geographic region. This evidence could be useful to other countries with similar settings and to policymakers charged with managing outbreaks and health.PMID:38576843 | PMC:PMC10993815 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2024.36 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics associated with maternal and congenital syphilis-A prospective study in Peru
Syphilis, one of the oldest known infectious diseases, is caused by a spirochetal pathogen Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum (T. pallidum henceforth). The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates a global prevalence of 36 million cases of syphilis, with 6-12 million new infections occurring annually. Syphilis is an easily treatable disease because parenteral treatment with Benzathine penicillin G usually clears T. pallidum infection. Yet, inaccessibility to proper testing and treatment facilities in resource limited regions remains the major cause of the high incidence of syphilis around the world. (Source: Internati...

WHO Documents Rising Resistance to First-Line HIV Drug
Currently, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends using dolutegravir, an integrase strand transfer inhibitor approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2013, as a first- and second-line drug for treating people with HIV. But resistance to the treatment is on the rise. About 4% to as many as about 20% of people in 4 countries reporting data —Malawi, Mozambique, Uganda, and Ukraine—who had not achieved viral suppression exhibited resistance while taking the drug as part of their antiretroviral therapy, a recent report by the WHO found. Beverages - a scoping review for Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023
In conclusion, current evidence suggests that moderate coffee and tea consumption have no long-term adverse health effects. The evidence of beneficial effects of coffee consumption on liver and endometrial cancer risk, and some cardiovascular outcomes, comes from observational studies. High consumption of boiled coffee should be avoided due to negative effect on lipid profile. Pregnant women should not exceed the recommended daily dose of caffeine intake of 200 mg set by the European Food Safety Authority as a safe level for the fetus. High consumption of SSBs has consistently been associated with adverse health effects, w...
