Br J Nutr. 2024 Apr 18:1-21. doi: 10.1017/S0007114524000801. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe current study aimed to investigate the effects of ageing on oral immunity using β-defensin (DEFB) 1/2 as a marker and evaluate the effects of curcumin (CUR) on these processes. The study sample included 30 male C57BL/6J mice divided into three groups based on the treatment method used. The young control (YC) and old control (OC) groups received 0.5% methylcellulose-400 (curcumin vehicle) orally for five days, whereas the CUR group of older mice received a curcumin solution suspended in 0.5% methylcellulose-400 (dose: 3.0 mg/kg b...

Repellent activity of Vitex negundo and Curcuma longa herbal extract against simulium species in India
CONCLUSION: At an optimum concentration of 10%, the methanolic extract of vitex negundo cream provided complete protection times (CPTs) 320.4, 358.6, and 346.4 minutes, respectively. This finding offers confirmation of the methanolic extract and chloroform extract potential for use in new blackfly repellents.PMID:38634372 | DOI:10.4103/JVBD.JVBD_181_23 (Source: Journal of Vector Borne Diseases)

Future aspects of plant derived bioactive metabolites as therapeutics to combat benign prostatic hyperplasia
CONCLUSION: The review proposes and endorses careful utilization of conventional medications that may be investigated further to discover possible PDE-5, 5 alpha-reductase, an alpha-blocker inhibitor for managing BPH. Even though most conventional formulations, such as 5 alpha-reductase, are readily available, systemic assessment of the effectiveness and mechanism of action of the herbal constituents is still necessary to identify novel chemical moieties that can be further developed for maximum efficacy. However, there exist abundant botanicals and medicinal plants across several regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas,...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1554: The Role of Curcumin in Cancer: A Focus on the PI3K/Akt Pathway
os A. Alexiou Cancer is a life-threatening disease and one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Despite significant advancements in therapeutic options, most available anti-cancer agents have limited efficacy. In this context, natural compounds with diverse chemical structures have been investigated for their multimodal anti-cancer properties. Curcumin is a polyphenol isolated from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa and has been widely studied for its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-cancer effects. Curcumin acts on the regulation of different aspects of cancer development, including initiation, metastasis, an...

Enhanced environmental stress resistance and functional properties of the curcumin-shellac nano-delivery system: Anti-flocculation of poly- γ-glutamic acid
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 15:131607. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131607. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCurcumin was widely designed as nanoparticles to remove application restrictions. The occurrence of flocculation is a primary factor limiting the application of the curcumin nano-delivery system. To enhance the environmental stress resistance and functional properties of shellac-curcumin nanoparticles (S-Cur-NPs), γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) was utilized as an anti-flocculant. The encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of S-Cur-NPs were also improved with γ-PGA incorporation. FTIR and XRD analysis confirmed...

Recoverable and degradable carboxymethyl chitosan polyelectrolyte hydrogel film for ultra stable encapsulation of curcumin
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 15:131616. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131616. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHydrogels have shown great potential for application in food science due to their diverse functionalities. However, most hydrogels inevitably contain toxic chemical cross-linking agent residues, posing serious food safety concerns. In this paper, a curcumin/sodium alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogels (CSCH) were prepared by self-assembly of two oppositely charged polysaccharides, carboxymethyl chitosan and sodium alginate, to form a three-dimensional network encapsulating curcumin for extending food shelf life. ...

Preparation of pH-sensitive porous polylactic acid-based medical dressing with self-pumping function
In this study, we fabricated a pH-sensitive colorimetric chronic wound dressing with self-pumping function using electrostatic spinning technology. It consisted of three layers: a polylactic acid-curcumin (PCPLLA) hydrophobic layer, a hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) transfer layer, and a polyacrylonitrile-purple kale anthocyanin (PAN-PCA) hydrophilic layer. The results showed that the preparation of porous PLLA fiber membrane loaded with 0.2 % Cur was achieved by adjusting the spinning-related parameters, which could ensure that the composite dressing had sufficient anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant prop...

Curcumin regulates pulmonary extracellular matrix remodeling and mitochondrial function to attenuate pulmonary fibrosis by regulating the miR-29a-3p/DNMT3A axis
Biomed Pharmacother. 2024 Apr 15;174:116572. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2024.116572. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEpigenetic regulation and mitochondrial dysfunction are essential to the progression of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Curcumin (CCM) in inhibits the progression of pulmonary fibrosis by regulating the expression of specific miRNAs and pulmonary fibroblast mitochondrial function; however, the underlying mechanism is unclear. C57BL/6 mice were intratracheally injected with bleomycin (5 mg/kg) and treated with CCM (25 mg/kg body weight/3 times per week, intraperitoneal injection) for 28 days. Verhoeff-Van Gieso...
