'To have a plan': teachers' perceptions of working with a literacy instruction combining phonics and comprehension applications for students with intellectual disability and communication difficulties
CONCLUSION: Four themes were identified in the analysis. It was seen that the teachers found it valuable to have access to two apps accessing and facilitating the use of different literacy strategies in meeting the needs of individual students. This digital format was also perceived as positive, contributing to creating a supportive and systematic learning environment that enhanced and increased literacy learning. The teachers recurringly also talked about the positive influence of participating in research, lifting the strong focus, and positive attention as very important for both teachers and students.PMID:38646848 | DO...

The student-teacher framework guided by self-training and consistency regularization for semi-supervised medical image segmentation
by Boliang Li, Yaming Xu, Yan Wang, Luxiu Li, Bo Zhang Due to the high suitability of semi-supervised learning for medical image segmentation, a plethora of valuable research has been conducted and has achieved noteworthy success in this field. However, many approaches tend to confine their focus to a singular semi-supervised framework, thereby overlo oking the potential enhancements in segmentation performance offered by integrating several frameworks. In this paper, we propose a novel semi-supervised framework named Pesudo-Label Mean Teacher (PLMT), which synergizes the self-training pipeline with pseudo-labeling and co...

“Deeper cuts”: A 55-word story.
Families, Systems, & Health, Vol 42(1), Mar 2024, 133; doi:10.1037/fsh0000816Health professionals spend their careers in the expert care of patients experiencing difficult and chronic illnesses. However, there is no equivalent in professional training for personal, lived experiences as patients or loved ones of patients, both of which can serve as unforgettably humanizing teachers for building empathy, compassion, and perspective-taking skills. This 55-word story is a reflection on a memorable moment in one such experience. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: Families, Systems, and Health)

Assessment of knowledge towards first aid skills of epilepsy among undergraduate health students in Riyadh province of Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: The study concluded that most undergraduate health students demonstrated poor knowledge scores in delivering seizure first aid. This finding suggests that introducing epilepsy education from the first year in all health-related courses is crucial to improving overall awareness and skills in providing seizure first aid.PMID:38643662 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109788 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Does facial structure explain differences in student evaluations of teaching? The role of fWHR as a proxy for perceived dominance
Econ Hum Biol. 2024 Apr 16;54:101381. doi: 10.1016/j.ehb.2024.101381. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDominance is usually viewed as a positive male attribute, but this is not typically the case for women. Using a novel dataset of student evaluations of teaching in a school of Business and Economics of a selective university, we construct the face width-to-height ratio (fWHR) as a proxy for perceived dominance to assess whether individuals with a higher ratio obtain better evaluations. Our results show that a higher fWHR is associated with a better evaluation for male faculty, while the opposite is the case for female facult...

Teachers ’ Perceptions of the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Their Implementation of an Evidence-based HIV Prevention Program in the Bahamas
In this study, we assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the implementation of a HIV prevention intervention in The Bahamas. Data were collected from 139 Grade 6 teachers in 2021 –2022. Teachers attended virtual training and received implementation monitoring from coordinators. On average, teachers taught 26.4 (SD = 9.2) of the 35 core activities, and 7.4 (SD = 2.4) out of 9 sessions. More than half (58.3%) of teachers completed 28 or more core activities; 69.1% co vered eight or all nine sessions, which is equivalent to 80% of the HIV intervention curriculum. Almost half of the teachers (43%) reported t...

Facilitators, barriers, and strategies of communication in Malaysian school-age children with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate: Results of in-depth online qualitative interviews
This study explores the perceptions of facilitators, barriers to communication and strategies in Malaysian school-aged children with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate (CL/P), parents, and teachers. Fourteen children with non-syndromic CL/P aged 7 to 12 years, their parents (n = 16), and their teachers (n = 10) were recruited via purposive sampling. Participants were selected based on resilience scores (RS-10; (Wagnild, 2015) distinguishing low (<34) from high resilience (35-40) (Wagnild, 2015). Individual in-depth interviews were conducted online and evaluated qualitatively. The analyses were conducted utilising the gu...

Contextualized, Multicomponent Language Instruction: From Theory to Randomized Controlled Trial
CONCLUSIONS: There is growing support for the use of multicomponent CLIs to bring about educationally relevant outcomes for students with LLDs. The authors present this review of how SKILL was designed, manualized, and rigorously tested by a team of researchers and practitioners with the hope that this approach will serve as a springboard for the development of future multicomponent CLIs that may meaningfully improve communicative and educational outcomes for students with LLDs.PMID:38640078 | DOI:10.1044/2024_LSHSS-23-00171 (Source: Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools)
