Metacognitive Awareness as the Predictor of Positive Self-Critical Rumination, Personal Best Goals (PBs), and Language Achievement
In this study, positive metacognition was employed. To measure the metacognitive awareness in this study, the scale developed by Schraw and Dennison (1994) was used. It comprised 52 statements measuring two broad classifications of knowledge of cognition (two subcomponents), and regulation of cognition (five subcomponents). To measure student PB goals, the Persian version of ‘Personal Best Goals Scale’ developed by Martin (2006) and translated to Persian and validated by Najafzadeh et al. (2019) was considered. The 16 statements that made up the personal best scale assessed challenging goals, specific goals, competitiv...

Baseball, Presidents, and State Test Passages: Considering Gendered Knowledge in Literacy Research, Curricula, and Assessments
AbstractThe role of knowledge and reading comprehension has seen a recent explosion of attention from researchers, journalists, and policy advocates. Much of this discourse describes knowledge in neutral terms such as knowledge of “the world”. That knowledge of the world, however, is woven into the fabric of the gendered world we live in and its gendered education systems. In this article, we delve into three “exhibits” to highlight gendered aspects of knowledge and comprehension research and practice. In the first ex hibit, we demonstrate the gendered nature of knowledge research by examining the male-centric part...

Carer-reported sleep disturbance and carer- and teacher-rated executive functioning in children with prenatal alcohol exposure and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
Child Neuropsychol. 2024 Apr 12:1-22. doi: 10.1080/09297049.2024.2337715. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChildren with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) have high rates of sleep disturbance and marked difficulties with executive functioning (EF). Sleep disturbance has been associated with poorer EF across development in typically developing children. The contribution of insomnia symptoms and nightmares to EF difficulties in children with PAE and FASD is unclear. The current study examined whether caregiver-reported insomnia symptoms and nightmares predicted difficulties with EF in ch...
