The antibiogram of pus cultures in federal tertiary care hospital, Islamabad and its utility in antimicrobial stewardship
CONCLUSION: The generation of a local antibiogram specific to the hospital setting is essential to effectively manage infections empirically and preserve the efficacy of existing antibiotics. By implementing antimicrobial stewardship practices based on a better understanding of antibiotic susceptibility patterns, we can contribute to the mitigation of antibiotic resistance and improve patient outcomes.PMID:38682051 | PMC:PMC11055436 | DOI:10.18502/ijm.v16i1.14871 (Source: Iranian Journal of Microbiology)

Accessory Gene Regulator (agr) group polymorphisms in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and its association with biofilm formation
In this study, 34 MRSA strains out of 100 S. aureus isolates were recovered in a variety of clinical samples. Phenotypic characterization and ability of biofilm formation were assessed. About 8(24%) of isolates were biofilm producers. The percentages of biofilm production among isolates were 3(37.5%), 2(25%), 3(37.5%) as strong, moderate, and weak, respectively. Furthermore, the resistance rates for all antibiotics were higher in biofilm producers and 76% of the isolates were staphyloxanthin producers, around 82% of the strains showed resistance to H2O2. Hemolytic activity was detected in 74% of the total isolates. The act...

Ligand-Free Silver Nanoparticles: An Innovative Strategy against Viruses and Bacteria
Microorganisms. 2024 Apr 18;12(4):820. doi: 10.3390/microorganisms12040820.ABSTRACTThe spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the rise of emerging and re-emerging viruses in recent years constitute significant public health problems. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new antimicrobial strategies to overcome these challenges. Herein, we describe an innovative method to synthesize ligand-free silver nanoparticles by Pulsed Laser Ablation in Liquid (PLAL-AgNPs). Thus produced, nanoparticles were characterized by total X-ray fluorescence, zeta potential analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nanoparticl...

Investigation of the Antibacterial Synergistic Activity of Fosfomycin-Teicoplanin Combination in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Strains Isolated from Various Clinical Sample
Mikrobiyol Bul. 2024 Apr;58(2):113-124. doi: 10.5578/mb.202498156.ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to investigate the detection of teicoplanin and fosfomycin antibiotic susceptibility of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains by different methods and to evaluate the antibacterial synergistic effect of teicoplanin-fosfomycin combination by using checkerboard assay and time kill curve assay. Forty-five MRSA strains isolated from clinical samples in routine medical microbiology laboratory of Göztepe Prof. Dr. Süleyman Yalçın City Hospital were included in the study. In the first stage of the combinati...

OriPlex: Origami-enabled multiplexed detection of respiratory pathogens
Biosens Bioelectron. 2024 Apr 25;257:116341. doi: 10.1016/j.bios.2024.116341. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOrigami biosensors leverage paper foldability to develop total analysis systems integrated in a single piece of paper. This capability can also be utilized to incorporate additional features that would be difficult to achieve with rigid substrates. In this article, we report a new design for 3D origami biosensors called OriPlex, which leverages the foldability of filter paper for the multiplexed detection of bacterial pathogens. OriPlex immunosensors detect pathogens by folding nanoparticle reservoirs containing diff...
