Recognising inaccuracies in Australian suicide and 'hidden suicide' data
CONCLUSIONS: Australia's finalised suicide data are likely to be more accurate than equivalent data from nations that do not revise mortality data. More comprehensive investigation (including verbal or psychological autopsy) in doubtful cases in Australia and elsewhere would probably lead to reported suicide rates being higher.PMID:38653498 | DOI:10.1177/10398562241245548 (Source: Australasian Psychiatry)

A longitudinal network analysis of suicide risk factors among service members and veterans sampled for suicidal ideation or attempt
CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that ineffectiveness, low belongingness, and agitation are important drivers of moment-to-moment and longitudinal relations between risk factors for suicidal ideation in ADSM and veterans. Targeting these symptoms may disrupt suicidal ideation.PMID:38651175 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000734 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Patient-related stressful experiences in  psychiatry residency
CONCLUSION: In this study new patient related stressful experiences are reported that have not previously been described in the literature. Since estimating the impact of a patient related stressful experience proves difficult, it seems appropriate that the environment of the resident offers active support and further development of residents’ skills is stimulated.PMID:38650512 (Source: Tijdschrift voor Psychiatrie)

Interrupting Effect of Social Distancing on Ischemic Heart Disease, Asthma, Stroke, and Suicide Attempt Patients by PM < sub > 2.5 < /sub > Exposure
CONCLUSION: While the interrupting effect of SD was not as pronounced as anticipated, this study did validate the effectiveness of SD in modifying health behaviors and minimizing avoidable visits to EDs in addition to curtailing the occurrence of infectious diseases.PMID:38653569 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2023.0135 (Source: Yonsei Medical Journal)

Structural adverse childhood experiences associated with suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and repetitive nonsuicidal self-injury among racially and ethnically minoritized youth
CONCLUSION: Reducing structural ACEs may reduce SI, SA, and repetitive NSSI among ethnoracially minoritized youth populations. Disaggregating diverse youth groups revealed variations in these outcomes that remain hidden when subpopulations are aggregated.PMID:38651757 | DOI:10.1111/sltb.13084 (Source: Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior)

Suicide and suicidality in Australian Defence Force veterans: A systematic scoping review
CONCLUSIONS: Gaps were identified in relation to the relative contributions to risk from transition, the various psychosocial correlates (for example, relationships, finances, employment), pre-service factors and the extent to which these are causal or mediating in nature. A better understanding of health service utilisation would also aid in targeting preventive efforts. Future research in these areas is warranted.PMID:38650320 | DOI:10.1177/00048674241246443 (Source: The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry)

Thematic analysis of Prevention of Future Death reports for suicide: January 2021 to October 2022

Problem Gambling and Suicidal Behaviours in Young Adult men in Ghana: A Moderated Mediation Model of Psychological Distress and Social Support
This study assessed if the effect of problem gambling severity on suicidal behaviours (ideation, planning, and attempts) through psychological distress is contingent on the level of perceived social support. A total of 350 young adult men in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana provided the data for the current analysis. The data were analysed using a moderated mediation approach. The results showed that psychological distress is an important intervening mechanism through which problem gambling severity influences suicidality. In addition, the positive association between psychological distress and suicidal behaviours was fou...

Sociologic and Psychiatric Aspects of U.S. Gun Violence: A Cure For This Endemic
There are at least fifty million more guns in than people in America. The U.S. also suffers more shootings and ten times more gun deaths per-capita than any other developed country in the world1. Clearly the underlying problem is the widespread availability of weapons exclusively and efficiently designed to kill humans. These are the semi-automatic, double action handguns (E.G. Glock, Sig-Sauer, Beretta, etc.) used in homicides and suicides and the assault rifles used in mass shootings. However, upon forensic analysis virtually every event of gun violence (GV) routinely embodies societal and individual factors that made it...

Do the management and functional outcomes of the surgically treated spinal fractures change in suicidal jumpers?
ConclusionPsychiatric disorders are more common in patients in the suicidal jumpers. The presence of underlying psychiatric problems adversely affects the postoperative functional outcomes of patients with surgically treated spinal fractures. A multidisciplinary approach together with raising awareness in this way can improve the clinical outcomes after orthopedic treatment, even if there is physical disability.
