The Relationship Between CYP46A1 Polymorphism and Suicide Risk: A Preliminary Investigation
This study examines the association betweenCYP46A1 polymorphisms, specifically SNPs rs754203 and rs4900442, and suicide risk in a Mexican MDD patient cohort. Our study involved 188 unrelated suicide death victims, 126 MDD patients, and 144 non-suicidal controls. Genotypic and allelic frequencies were assessed using the Real Time-polymerase chain reaction method, and associations with suicide risk were evaluated using chi-square tests. The study revealed significant differences in allelic and genotypic frequencies in rs754203 SNP between suicide death and controls. TheCYP46A1 rs754203 genotype G/G was significantly linked w...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 456: Teen Perspectives on Suicides and Deaths in an Affluent Community: Perfectionism, Protection, and Exclusion
ris Clusters of youth suicide and death are tragic for communities and present long-term consequences for the surviving youths. Despite an awareness of community-based patterns in youth suicide, our understanding of the social and community factors behind these events remains poor. While links between poverty and suicide have been well documented, wealthy communities are rarely targeted in suicide research. In response to this gap, we conducted ethnographic research in a wealthy U.S. town that, over a recent 10-year period, witnessed at least four youth suicides and seven more youth accidental deaths. Our interviews (n...

Evolution of Depressive Symptoms Among Depression Subtypes of Clinical and Functional Variables in Primary Care in Chile
CONCLUSION: These results provide additional evidence of a complex depression subtype in primary care in Chile associated with adverse childhood experiences, that had worse resolution of depressive symptoms. Contrary to expectations, patients belonging to this group did not receive further medical and psychological interventions, probably due to a lack of specific clinical recommendations.PMID:38584447 | PMC:PMC11003339 | DOI:10.1177/21501319241241476 (Source: Primary Care)

Suicide ideation and male-female differences in major depressive disorder
CONCLUSIONS: In these selected samples, although women had more severe depression, men had more suicide risk factors. Such differences might contribute to men's increased suicide risk.PMID:38587055 | DOI:10.1080/13651501.2024.2335950 (Source: International Journal of Psychiatry in Clinical Practice)

Preadolescent Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors: An Intensive Longitudinal Study of Risk Factors
This study used intensive longitudinal sampling to assess concurrent associations between risk factors and STB status, how proximal changes in risk factors were related to STB status, and how risk factors prospectively predicted changes in STB status in a preadolescent sample enriched for early childhood psychopathology. Toward a clearer understanding of what works to reduce gun violence: the role of falsification strategies
Am J Epidemiol. 2024 Apr 6:kwae036. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwae036. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStrong epidemiologic evidence from ecologic and individual-level studies in the United States supports the claim that access to firearms substantially increases the risk of dying by suicide, homicide, and firearm accidents. Less certain is how well particular interventions work to prevent these deaths and other firearm-related harms. Given the limits of existing data to study firearm violence, and the infeasibility of conducting randomized trials of firearm access, it is important to do the best we can with the data we already have....

Identifying Factors Associated with Bullying Roles Using the interRAI Child and Youth Mental Health (ChYMH) Suite of Instruments
This study aimed to examine factors associated with bullying roles in a large clinical sample (n = 26,069) using interRAI Child and Youth Mental Health assessments. Findings revealed children who both bullied peers and were victims of bullying (compared to those who were solely bullies, victims, or neither) were more likely to experience interpersonal traumas including witnessing domestic violence, physical and sexual assault; increased risk of self-harm and suicide, depression; more behavioural/externalizing problems; conflict within the school and home contexts; and higher levels of financial, familial, and living instab...
