Meeting the WHO physical activity guidelines is associated with lower odds of depression in older adults: Potential psychosomatic mechanisms
Depression is a major psychologic-related disorder and a leading cause of global disability, affecting more than 322 million people worldwide1,2, with approximately 47 million disability-adjusted life-years in 20193. Comorbid depression is highly related to premature death4 and a main precursor to suicide behaviors5. Depression is a serious public health concern in later life and remains prevalent among older people (i.e., 7.0% compared to 4.4% in the general global population2, while approximately 7.3% of older Ghanaians report depression61), with debilitating consequences. This study investigates how adolescents' leisure time is related to suicidality, distinguishing between general aspects and various specific leisure time activities. Data from adolescents in counseling (n = 25) and the general population (n = 57) were analyzed. Adolescents who spend most of their leisure time alone are more suicidal than adolescents who spend their leisure time with others. General aspects of leisure activities were related to suicidality; among specific activities, only sports activities were found to be significant. The strongest association with suicidality was shared activities with others. Based on the...

Exploratory Clinical Trial of a Depression Diagnostic Software That Integrates Stress Biomarkers and Composite Psychometrics
CONCLUSION: This study suggested possible clinical effectiveness of Minds.NAVI, a depression screening tool that integrates psychometric measures and stress hormone biomarkers. The findings support the potential association between depression, chronic stress, and HPA axis hyporesponsiveness.PMID:38569581 | PMC:PMC10990624 | DOI:10.30773/pi.2023.0253 (Source: Psychiatry Investigation)

Suicide Screening, Risk Assessment, and Lethal Means Counseling During Zero Suicide Implementation
CONCLUSIONS: Six health systems that implemented ZS showed a high level of variation in the proportions of patients receiving suicide screening and risk assessment and lethal means counseling. Two opportunities emerged for further study to increase frequency of these practices: expanding screening beyond patients with regular health care visits and implementing risk assessment with lethal means counseling in the primary care setting directly after a positive suicidal ideation screening.PMID:38566561 | DOI:10.1176/appi.ps.20230211 (Source: Psychiatric Services)
