Suicide prevention in old age : Importance of depressive disorders and implications for the discussion on assisted suicide
This article gives an overview of possibilities for suicide prevention in old age, with an emphasis on depression. A broad range of approaches are available, which are described differentiated into universal, selective and indicated strategies. In Germany the working group "Old people" of the National Suicide Prevention Program (NaSPro) has worked out these strategies in a differentiated way and with respect to the international discussions. The influence of the debate on assisted suicide and the influence of cognitive changes on suicidal ideation in old age are discussed. A further large need for concrete measures and als...

HLM chip - A microfluidic approach to study the mechanistic basis of cytochrome P450 inhibition using immobilized human liver microsomes
In this study, we conceptualize a microfluidic approach to mechanistic CYP inhibition studies using human liver microsomes (HLMs) immobilized onto the walls of a polymer micropillar array. We evaluated the feasibility of these HLM chips for CYP inhibition studies by establishing the stability and the enzyme kinetics for a CYP2C9 model reaction under microfluidic flow and determining the half-maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of three human CYP2C9 inhibitors (sulfaphenazole, tienilic acid, miconazole), including evaluation of their inhibition mechanisms and nonspecific microsomal binding on chip. Overall, the enzyme ...

How much or how often? Examining the screening properties of the DSM cross-cutting symptom measure in a youth population-based sample
CONCLUSIONS: The DSM-XC domains showed transdiagnostic screening properties, providing small but meaningful changes in the likelihood of internalizing disorders in the community, which can be improved by asking frequency of symptoms compared to intensity. The DSM-XC is currently lacking meaningful domains for externalizing disorders.PMID:38639338 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000849 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

The Ethics of Transitioning to Comfort Care in a Potentially Survivable Injury After Attempted Suicide
1. Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to describe the ethical challenges in decision-making for patients with life-threatening though potentially survivable injury after attempted suicide.2. Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to analyze methods for resolving clinical and ethical conflicts related to end-of-life decision making for patients with serious mental illness. Real-world evidence from a retrospective study on suicide during depression: clinical characteristics, treatment patterns and disease burden
Suicide stands as both a primary symptom and the direst outcome of major depressive disorder (MDD). The scarcity of effective treatment strategies makes managing MDD patients with suicide especially challengin... (Source: BMC Psychiatry)

Sociodemographic and clinical risk factors for suicidal ideation and suicide attempt in functional/dissociative seizures and epilepsy: a large cohort study
Conclusions This is the first study systematically reporting risk factors for suicidality in people with FDS. Results for the large epilepsy cohort complement previous studies and will be useful in future meta-analyses. Clinical implications Risk factors identified will help identify higher-risk groups in clinical settings. (Source: Evidence-Based Mental Health)

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 509: Validating Constructs of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 and Exploring Health Indicators to Predict the Psychological Outcomes of Students Enrolled in the Pacific Islands Cohort of College Students
The objectives of this study were to validate the DASS-21 for use in Guam, an island that endures a high burden of mental health challenges, such as suicide, and examine the predictive impact of selected health indicators on DASS-21 variables. Three years of data (2017–2019) were pooled from the Pacific Islands Cohort of College Students (PICCS) study conducted annually at the University of Guam. In total, 726 students were included in the secondary data analysis. MPlus statistical software was used to perform a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for the validation and structural equation modeling (SEM) for t...

Examining Differences in the Genetic and Functional Architecture of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Diagnosed in Childhood and Adulthood
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that ADHD diagnosed later in life shows much stronger genetic overlap with internalizing disorders and related traits. This may indicate the potential clinical relevance of distinguishing these subgroups or increased misdiagnosis for those diagnosed later in life. Top transcriptome-wide SEM results implicated genes related to neuronal function and clinical characteristics (e.g., sleep).PMID:38633226 | PMC:PMC11021367 | DOI:10.1016/j.bpsgos.2024.100307 (Source: Biol Sci Space)

Dimensions of family stress and repetitive nonsuicidal self-injury in adolescence: Examining the interactive effects of impulsivity and emotion dysregulation
CONCLUSIONS: These findings lend empirical support to dimensional models of adversity and suggest that adolescents who experience threat-related family stress may have greater impulsivity and are more likely to report R-NSSI in the context of emotion dysregulation.PMID:38636157 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106804 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)
