[Compatibility of caring in dementia, family and employment].
CONCLUSION: The burden of informal caregiving for PWD leads to impairments in family and working life, which can have negative consequences for the health of the family caregivers; however, family and work can also reduce the burden if caregivers are supported by, for example therapeutic services, to experience positive care experiences, such as strengthened family relationships and functionality and if employed caregivers experience work as a strengthening area of life. h A Abstract With respect to the diversity of age and aging, dementia poses a key challenge in our present long living society. In this respect dementia is not only a challenge for those who are diagnosed with dementia but also for their long-term caregivers. The majority of people with dementia receive care from close relatives, such as life partners in their own four walls; however, what is often a stroke of luck for the person with dementia, often means a lot of strain and spatial restrictions for the caring relative. With a praxeologically guided perspective on nursing, this article foc...

Carbohydrates in nutrition: friend or foe?
mm A Abstract Fats, proteins and carbohydrates are the main energy supplies in human nutrition. The ratio of these three has often been discussed within the nutritional sciences over the years. Carbohydrates were important for our ancestors since many carbohydrate-rich foods were easily storable without cooling in comparison to protein-rich or fat-rich food, such as meat or fish. While humans consumed a mostly low-calorie nutrition and experienced seasonal changes in food availability and abundance for a long time, food supply changed in the last 100 years. We are now living in abundance, leading to a&nb...

Protein intake in older people : Why, how much and how?
Abstract The protein intake of older people has gained increasing scientific interest as a potential factor to delay the age-associated decline in muscle mass and consequently to counteract the development of sarcopenia. The skeletal muscle of older people seems less responsive to the anabolic stimulus of protein intake. Therefore, higher protein needs are discussed to overcome this anabolic resistance and to maintain muscle mass as far as possible. Besides the total amount of protein consumed, the distribution, quality and timing in relation to physical exercise are considered relevant; however, deriving clear re...

Abstract Parasomnias are characterized by abnormal experiences, dreams, movements and behavior during sleep. They may occur in the middle of the sleep during REM (rapid eye movement) or NREM (non-rapid eye movement), during falling asleep or waking up. Characteristically for REM behavior disorder is an increased muscle tone although usually REM is defined by an absence of muscle tone. For these forms aggressive dreams may lead to violating bed partners or self-injury of the sleeping person. Even killing bed partners has been described.
