Improved adherence to statin treatment and differences in results between men and women after pictorial risk communication —a sub-study of the VIPVIZA RCT
ConclusionsBoth men and women were receptive to pictorial information regarding CVD risk, but the intervention effect was more pronounced in women. Sex differences are important when considering risk communication strategies. Periodically repeating the intervention was beneficial for maintaining the intervention effect over time.Trial registrationThe VIPVIZA study is registered withClinicalTrials.gov, May 8, 2013, number NCT01849575. Sensitive "release-on-demand" fluorescent genosensors for probing DNA damage induced by commonly used cardiovascular drugs: Comparative study
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 26:131821. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131821. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular drugs (CVDs) are agents working on the heart and the vascular system to treat many cardiovascular disorders. Such disorders represent the leading cause for morbidity and mortality worldwide. The treatment regimen includes different administered drugs on chronic basis. The cumulative drugs in human body coincides with exposure to electromagnetic radiations from different sources leading to drug-radiation interaction that may lead to drug photosensitization. Such photosensitization may lead to mutagenesi...

Optimizing lipid control in Taiwanese diabetic patients: A collaborative consensus by the Diabetes Association of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Taiwanese Association of Diabetes Educators
We present an in-depth analysis of dyslipidemia management strategies for patients with diabetes mellitus in Taiwan. It critically examines the disparity between established guideline recommendations and actual clinical practices, particularly in the context of evolving policies affecting statin prescriptions. The focus is on synthesizing the most recent findings concerning lipid management in patients with diabetes mellitus, with a special emphasis on establishing consensus regarding low-density lipoprotein cholesterol treatment targets. The article culminates in providing comprehensive, evidence-based recommendations tai...

Results of a pilot study of the structure and evaluation of the therapy for chronic sleep disorders in comorbid patients with chronic cerebral ischemia
CONCLUSIONS: The clinical effectiveness of the drug Cortexin has been proven for all types of sleep disorders. The clinical effectiveness of the drug Cortexin at a dose of 10 mg IM for 10 days has been proven in patients with chronic sleep disorders due to CHI.PMID:38676686 | DOI:10.17116/jnevro2024124041118 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Statin Therapy and Cardiovascular Protection in Type 2 Diabetes: The Role of Baseline LDL-Cholesterol Levels: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Observational Studies
This study aimed to determine the association of statin use in T2D patients with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and all-cause mortality and whether this association differs by baseline LDL-C levels. (Source: Nutrition, Metabolism, and Cardiovascular Diseases : NMCD)

Correlations between preoperative statin treatment with short- and long-term survival following colorectal cancer surgery: a propensity score-matched national cohort study
ConclusionAlthough a subgroup of patients with a preoperative exposure time of 90  days showed statistically significant better overall survival, we found no statistically significant association between statin exposure 1 year before colorectal cancer surgery and overall survival. Atherosclerosis Residual Lipid Risk-Overview of Existing and Future Pharmacotherapies
J Cardiovasc Dev Dis. 2024 Apr 21;11(4):126. doi: 10.3390/jcdd11040126.ABSTRACTPatients with atherosclerotic disease remain at increased risk of future events despite receiving optimal medical treatment. This residual risk is widely heterogeneous, but lipoprotein particles and their content play a major role in determining future cardiovascular events. Beyond low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), other lipoprotein particles have not demonstrated similar contribution to the progression of atherosclerosis. Statins, ezetimibe, and more recently, proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors and bempedoic ...

Microbial Features Linked to Medication Strategies in Cardiometabolic Disease Management
ACS Pharmacol Transl Sci. 2024 Feb 5;7(4):991-1001. doi: 10.1021/acsptsci.3c00261. eCollection 2024 Apr 12.ABSTRACTHuman gut microbiota are recognized as critical players in both metabolic disease and drug metabolism. However, medication-microbiota interactions in cardiometabolic diseases are not well understood. To gain a comprehensive understanding of how medication intake impacts the gut microbiota, we investigated the association of microbial structure with the use of single or multiple medications in a cohort of 134 middle-aged adults diagnosed with cardiometabolic disease, recruited from Alberta's Tomorrow Project. P...

Identifying organic micropollutants ´ transformation products from the soil dissipation experiment by non-targeted high-resolution mass spectrometry approach: Can we gain more than transformation product identity?
Environ Pollut. 2024 Apr 24:124038. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2024.124038. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRisk assessment of environmental hazards originating from xenobiotics extensively used worldwide (e.g., pharmaceuticals, bisphenols, or preservatives) requires a combined study of their effects, mobility, dissipation mechanisms, and subsequent transformation product identification and evaluation. We have developed an efficient accelerated solvent extraction method for a broad range of micropollutants of variable physical-chemical properties in soils to enable more accurate hazard characterisation. Micropollutant recoveries ...

Unused potential of lipid-lowering therapy in very high-risk patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. A retrospective data analysis
CONCLUSION: Switch to high-intensity statins and use of ezetimibe and PCSK9i was low in chronic ASCVD patients. Even though statin intake was high in high-risk patients, target levels were still not reached.PMID:38664125 | DOI:10.1016/j.numecd.2024.03.007 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Subclinical Atherosclerosis to Guide Treatment in Dyslipidemia and Diabetes Mellitus
Curr Atheroscler Rep. 2024 Apr 25. doi: 10.1007/s11883-024-01202-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: Dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes mellitus are two common conditions that are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). In this review, we aimed to provide an in-depth and contemporary review of non-invasive approaches to assess subclinical atherosclerotic burden, predict cardiovascular risk, and guide appropriate treatment strategies. We focused this paper on two main imaging modalities: coronary artery calcium (CAC) score and computed tomography coronary angiograph...
