Aspirin in Patients with Viral Hepatitis: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies
ConclusionsOur meta-analysis shows that in patients with chronic viral hepatitis, aspirin use is associated with a significantly reduced risk of liver cancer, but attention should be paid to the possible risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, and this conclusion needs further validation in the future. The Impact of Statin Intensity on Early Progression of Cardiac Allograft Vasculopathy
Purpose: Limited research has compared relative risks and benefits of different intensity statins after heart transplant (HT). We hypothesize that higher intensity statin therapy is associated with lower rates of cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) at 1-year post-HT. (Source: The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation)

Statins Reduce Inflammation, Oxidative Stress and Endothelial Cell Activation in a Model of Venous Congestion in Systolic Heart Failure Patients
Purpose: Acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) is characterized by venous congestion (VC) and elevation in biomarkers of inflammation, oxidative stress and endothelial cell (EC) activation. Secondary analyses of HF studies suggest that statins may reduce ADHF events; however, the mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we tested whether background treatment with statins buffers inflammation, oxidative stress and EC activation in an experimental model of VC among systolic HF pts. Statin-induced immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy with concomitant increase of anti-HMGCR and anti-ACHR antibodies
We present a case of a patient with a severe phenotype of the disease that was found to have an increase in anti-HMGCR and anti-ACHR antibodies. A potential association between these antibodies have not been previously described. A 67-year-old male with hyperlipidemia, who was recently initiated on atorvastatin therapy, presented to the ED with progressive muscle weakness. Within a few days of admission, the patient developed complete flaccid paralysis and respiratory distress requiring intubation. The patient ’s CK was elevated to 24,000 and there was an increase of anti-HMGCR and anti-ACHR antibodies. Impressions from ...

Effects of statin therapy on diagnoses of new-onset diabetes and worsening glycaemia in large-scale randomised blinded statin trials: an individual participant data meta-analysis
Lancet Diabetes Endocrinol. 2024 Mar 26:S2213-8587(24)00040-8. doi: 10.1016/S2213-8587(24)00040-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Previous meta-analyses of summary data from randomised controlled trials have shown that statin therapy increases the risk of diabetes, but less is known about the size or timing of this effect, or who is at greatest risk. We aimed to address these gaps in knowledge through analysis of individual participant data from large, long-term, randomised, double-blind trials of statin therapy.METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis of individual participant data from randomised controlled trial...

Comparative effects of pravastatin and rosuvastatin on carbohydrate metabolism in an experimental diabetic rat model
Acta Pharm. 2024 Mar 30;74(1):117-130. doi: 10.2478/acph-2024-0001. Print 2024 Mar 1.ABSTRACTStatin treatment may increase the risk of diabetes; there is insufficient data on how statins affect glucose regulation and glycemic control and the effects of statins on liver enzymes related to carbohydrate metabolism have not been fully studied. Therefore, we aimed to compare the effects of the statin derivatives, pravastatin, and rosuvastatin, on carbohydrate metabolism in an experimental diabetic rat model. Female Wistar albino rats were used and diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. Thereafter, ...
