Epidemiology and Management of Patients With Kidney Disease and Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) comprises approximately one-half of all diagnoses of heart failure. There is significant overlap of this clinical syndrome with chronic kidney disease (CKD), with many shared comorbid conditions. The presence of CKD in patients with HFpEF is one of the most powerful risk factors for adverse clinical outcomes, including death and heart failure hospitalization. The pathophysiology linking HFpEF and CKD remains unclear, but it is postulated to consist of numerous bidirectional pathways, including endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, obesity, insulin resistance, and impa...

A new method of alkalinity remediation for Cd-contaminated groundwater by PAAS-modified MgCO < sub > 3 < /sub > /Mg(OH) < sub > 2 < /sub > colloid
Chemosphere. 2024 Apr 30:142200. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.142200. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMg(OH)2 dissolves slowly and can provide a long-term source of alkalinity, thus a promising alternative reagent for the in situ remediation of heavy metal polluted groundwater. Unfortunately, it exhibits a relatively poor stabilization effect on heavy metal Cd due to the higher solubility of the resulting stabilized product, Cd(OH)2. To overcome this limitation, we investigated the use of MgCO3/Mg(OH)2 colloid modified by sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) to remove Cd from groundwater. Through ultrasonic dispersion, the molecula...

Synthesis of solid sodium silicate from waste glass and utilization on one-part alkali-activated materials based on spent oil filtering earth
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33368-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlkali activated materials (AAMs) commonly known as geopolymers are considered ecofriendly substitutes for Portland cement. However, these materials still have a significant environmental impact, owing mainly to the use of activators based on commercial chemical products. In this sense, this research focuses on the production and use of waste glass-derived activators AAMs as an alternative to commercial activators. Using a thermochemical synthesis method, activator compositions were systematically designed to achieve pred...

Polyacrylamide/sodium alginate/sodium chloride photochromic hydrogel with high conductivity, anti-freezing property and fast response for information storage and electronic skin
In this study, a novel photochromic hydrogel (PAAm/SA/NaCl-Mo7) was prepared by loading ammonium molybdate (Mo7) and sodium chloride (NaCl) into a dual-network hydrogel of polyacrylamide (PAAm) and sodium alginate (SA) using a simple one-pot method. PAAm/SA/NaCl-Mo7 hydrogel has excellent conductivity (175.9 S/cm), water retention capacity and anti-freezing properties, which can work normally at a low temperature of -28.4 °C. In addition, the prepared PAAm/SA/NaCl-Mo7 hydrogel exhibits fast response (<15 s), high transparency (>70 %), good toughness (maximum elongation up to 1500 %), good cyclic compression properti...

Salt reduction in myofibrillar protein gel via inhomogeneous distribution of sodium-containing encapsulated fish oil coacervate: Mucopenetration ability of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 30;268(Pt 2):131998. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131998. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe potential application of fish oil microcapsules as salt reduction strategies in low-salt myofibrillar protein (MP) gel was investigated by employing soy protein isolates/carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (SPI-CMC) coacervates enriched with 25 mM sodium chloride and exploring their rheological characteristics, taste perception, and microstructure. The results revealed that the SPI-CMC coacervate phase exhibited the highest sodium content under 25 mM sodium level, albeit with uneven distribution. Notably, th...

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by Fe,N co-doped walnut shell biochar for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole: performance and mechanisms
Environ Pollut. 2024 Apr 30:124018. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2024.124018. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFe and N co-doped walnut shell biochar (Fe,N-BC) was prepared through a one-pot pyrolysis procedure by using walnut shells as feedstocks, melamine as the N source, and iron(III) chloride as the Fe source. Moreover, pristine biochar (BC), nitrogen-doped biochar (N-BC), and α-Fe2O3-BC were synthesized as controls. All the prepared materials were characterized by different techniques and were used for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). A very high degradation rate for SMX ...

Enhanced ac4C detection in RNA via chemical reduction and cDNA synthesis with modified dNTPs
RNA. 2024 May 2:rna.079863.123. doi: 10.1261/rna.079863.123. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe functional analysis of epitranscriptomic modifications in RNA is constrained by a lack of methods that accurately capture their locations and levels. We previously demonstrated that the RNA modification N4-acetylcytidine (ac4C) can be mapped at base-resolution through sodium borohydride reduction to tetrahydroacetylcytidine (tetrahydro-ac4C), followed by cDNA synthesis to misincorporate adenosine opposite reduced ac4C sites, culminating in C:T mismatches at acetylated cytidines (RedaC:T). However, this process is relatively ineff...

Myeloid-derived growth factor ameliorates dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis by regulating macrophage polarization
J Mol Med (Berl). 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1007/s00109-024-02447-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by inflammatory conditions in the gastrointestinal tract. According to reports, IBD prevalence is increasing globally, with heavy economic and physical burdens. Current IBD clinical treatment is limited to pharmacological methods; therefore, new strategies are needed. Myeloid-derived growth factor (MYDGF) secreted by bone marrow-derived mononuclear macrophages has beneficial effects in multiple inflammatory diseases. To this end, the present study aimed to establish an experimental ...
