Using sequential applications of a novel silver diamine fluoride gel and sodium fluoride varnish to arrest severe early childhood caries lesions: A clinical trial with single group assignment
CONCLUSIONS: Two applications of 38% SDF gel and 2.5% sodium fluoride varnish arrested greater than 90% of carious surfaces at 1 year and with high levels of parental satisfaction.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Combined treatment was highly efficacious in a population with many caries lesions. This clinical trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov. The registration number is NCT05395065.PMID:38678451 | DOI:10.1016/j.adaj.2024.02.013 (Source: Journal of the American Dental Association)

A study on the simultaneous determination of nitrogen content and < sup > 15 < /sup > N isotope abundance in plants using peak height intensities at m/z 28 and 29
Talanta. 2024 Apr 16;275:126078. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2024.126078. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA method for simultaneous determination of nitrogen content and 15N isotope abundance in plants was established by Elemental analysis-gas isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Taking poplar leaves and l-glutamic acid as standards, nitrogen content was determined using the standard curve established by weighted least squares regression between the mass of nitrogen element and the total peak height intensity at m/z 28 and 29. Then the 15N isotope abundance was calculated with the peak height intensity at m/z 28 and 29. Through the c...

Development and validation of a photograph-based instrument to assess nutrition literacy: the NUTLY project
Appetite. 2024 Apr 26:107377. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2024.107377. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMost instruments measuring nutrition literacy evaluate theoretical knowledge, not necessarily reflecting skills relevant to food choices. We aimed to develop and validate a photograph-based instrument to assess nutrition literacy (NUTLY) among adults in Portugal. NUTLY assesses the ability to distinguish foods with different nutritional profiles; from each of several combinations of three photographs (two foods with similar contents and one with higher content) participants are asked to identify the food with the highest energy/so...

DIREN mitigates DSS-induced colitis in mice and attenuates collagen deposition via inhibiting the Wnt/ β-catenin and focal adhesion pathways
CONCLUSION: DIREN exerts a protective effect against DSS-induced UC by ameliorating colonic fibrosis via regulation of focal adhesion and the WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway, thereby inhibiting fibroblast migration and reducing collagen secretion.PMID:38678963 | DOI:10.1016/j.biopha.2024.116671 (Source: Biomedicine and pharmacotherapy = Biomedecine and pharmacotherapie)

Cardiovascular outcomes and molecular targets for the cardiac effects of Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors: A systematic review
Biomed Pharmacother. 2024 Apr 27;175:116650. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2024.116650. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), a new class of glucose-lowering drugs traditionally used to control blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, have been proven to reduce major adverse cardiovascular events, including cardiovascular death, in patients with heart failure irrespective of ejection fraction and independently of the hypoglycemic effect. Because of their favorable effects on the kidney and cardiovascular outcomes, their use has been expanded in all patients with an...

In-silico screening and identification of glycomimetic as potential human sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor
Comput Biol Chem. 2024 Apr 13;110:108074. doi: 10.1016/j.compbiolchem.2024.108074. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) is one of the important targets against type II diabetes mellitus. A typical SGLT2 inhibitor acts by inhibiting glucose reabsorption, thus lowering the blood glucose level. Unlike SGLT1, SGLT2 is responsible for almost 90% glucose reabsorption from glomerular filtrate. The current SGLT2 inhibitors include gliflozins, often prescribed as second or third-line agents in diabetes mellitus. The SGLT2 inhibitors also benefit patients with heart and kidney disease. Due to instabi...

A polylactic acid degrading lipase from Bacillus safensis: Characterization and structural analysis
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 26:131916. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131916. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA polylactic acid degrading triacylglycerol lipase (TGL) was identified from Bacillus safensis based on genome annotation and validated by real-time quantitative PCR. TGL displayed optimal activity at pH 9.0 and 55 °C. It maintained stability at pH 9.0 and temperatures 45 °C. The activity of TGL was found to benefit from the presence of potassium sodium ions, and low concentrations of Triton X-100. The TGL could erode the surface of polylactic acid films and increase its hydrophilicity. The hydrolysis products of p...
