Elongation of intercostal nerve cutaneous branches for breast and nipple neurotization during breast reconstruction after mastectomy for breast cancer: case-control study
CONCLUSION: Using the lateral cutaneous branch of the intercostal nerve as the innervating stump and elongating it with intercostal nerve grafts is a suitable technique to restore sensation after mastectomy. This method effectively innervates reconstructed breasts and spares the nipple/skin with minimal morbidity.PMID:38298070 | DOI:10.1093/bjs/znae005 (Source: The British Journal of Surgery)

Quality of life and subjective donor-site morbidity in patients after a free fibula flap
We evaluated the subjective donor-site morbidity and quality of life in patients with a free fibula flap (FFF) reconstruction in terms of self-reported symptoms, function and quality of life, and we compared inclusion vs. exclusion of the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) muscle in the graft, primary wound closure vs. skin graft and the occurrence vs. absence of donor-site complications. Effector Site Immune Dynamics in Refractory Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease: A Rockstar Trial Companion Study after Belumosudil Treatment.
Belumosudil (KD025) is an oral selective rho-associated coiled-coil kinase 2 (ROCK2) inhibitor approved for 3rd line therapy of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). Prior studies demonstrated reduced peripheral blood IL-17 activity and regulatory T cell recovery after ROCK2 inhibition but did not examine responses directly in cGVHD affected tissues. Here, we report tissue-level cGVHD immune dynamics after 6-months of belumosudil treatment in oral mucosa, salivary glands, and skin. (Source: Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation)

Sclerotic Graft-Versus-Host Disease of the Torso As a Determinant of Pulmonary Function and Clinical Outcomes
Reduced parameters of pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are a hallmark manifestation of pulmonary chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). Skin sclerosis, one of the most severe manifestations of cGVHD, could adversely impact lung volumes due to chest wall mobility restriction and complicate accurate diagnosis of lung disease. Assessing Treatment Response in Cutaneous Sclerosis after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation: A Chronic Gvhd Consortium Study
Cutaneous sclerosis, a highly morbid subtype of chronic graft vs. host disease (cGVHD), is associated with significant morbidity, disability, and poor response to available therapeutic agents. This limited response may be driven both by limited activity of available therapeutic agents and by limited sensitivity of NIH Response Measures for this cGVHD subtype. Given this need for novel sclerosis-specific response measures, we leveraged data from the national Chronic GVHD Consortium to examine which measures of skin and joint/fascia involvement were associated with treatment response. Dupilumab for Atopic Dermatitis-like Graft Versus Host Disease in Three Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant Recipients
Atopic dermatitis (AD)-like graft versus host disease (GVHD) is a chronic form of skin GVHD with features that include erythema, xerosis, scaling, and significant pruritus. Pediatric patients with AD-like GVHD often require treatment with systemic immunosuppression, including but not limited to corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors, mTOR inhibitors, and Janus kinase inhibitors. Cutaneous irritation is common and topical therapies such as emollients and corticosteroids along with oral antihistamines can be utilized for symptom control. Combination treatment with paclitaxel, carboplatin and cetuximab in maxillary sinus cancer: A case report
Oncol Lett. 2024 Jan 10;27(3):93. doi: 10.3892/ol.2024.14226. eCollection 2024 Mar.ABSTRACTThe standard treatment for maxillary sinus cancer is surgery; however, surgery for advanced cases often leads to significant aesthetic and functional disability. Combination treatment (induction chemotherapy) with paclitaxel, carboplatin and cetuximab (PCE) can be effective in head and neck cancer. The present study describes the case of a patient with advanced maxillary sinus cancer that was successfully treated using the PCE regimen. A 69-year-old man presented to the Department of Dentistry and Oral Surgery, Hokuto Hospital (Obihi...

Galectin-9 contributes to the survival of fully allogeneic skin grafts by modulating effector T cells and Tregs imbalance
Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand). 2023 Dec 31;69(15):89-94. doi: 10.14715/cmb/2023.69.15.15.ABSTRACTAllogeneic skin transplantation is an important clinical treatment for many diseases. Although Galectin-9 demonstrates multifaceted roles in modulating immune cell homeostasis and inflammation, its precise impact on balancing effector T cells and Tregs during allogeneic skin transplantation remains uncertain. This work was performed to evaluate the modulation of the survival time of allogeneic skin grafts by Gal-9 and to explore the critical mechanism involved in this process. Skin graft transplantation was conducted using C57...

Argentina ’s controversial new science head faces protests over cuts and privatization
Protests are a common sight in Buenos Aires, especially amid Argentina’s prolonged economic crisis. But lately the presidential palace and the Ministry of Economy haven’t been the only scenes of turmoil. In recent weeks angry crowds have also gathered at the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research of Argentina (CONICET), the country’s main science agency. CONICET’s own scientists and administrators are marching with drums, megaphones, and banners, hoping their voices reach the agency’s new and controversial head, veterinarian Daniel Salamone. Appointed by Argentina’s newly elected libertaria...

< em > Withania Somnifera < /em > Extract Mitigates Experimental Acute Graft versus Host Disease Without Abrogating Graft Versus Leukemia Effect
Cell Transplant. 2024 Jan-Dec;33:9636897241226573. doi: 10.1177/09636897241226573.ABSTRACTAcute graft versus host disease (aGvHD) is the major contributor of nonrelapse mortality in alloHSCT. It is associated with an inflammatory immune response manifesting as cytokine storm with ensuing damage to target organs such as liver, gut, and skin. Prevention of aGvHD while retaining the beneficial graft versus leukemia (GvL) effect remains a major challenge. Withania somnifera extract (WSE) is known for its anti-inflammatory, immune-modulatory, and anticancer properties, which are appealing in the context of aGvHD. Herein, we dem...

Tracheal Bronchus Detected During General Anesthesia: A Case Report
Anesth Prog. 2023 Dec 1;70(4):173-177. doi: 10.2344/anpr-70-02-09.ABSTRACTA tracheal bronchus is a congenital abnormality of the tracheobronchial tree in which a displaced or accessory bronchus arises from the trachea superior to its bifurcation. We herein report a case in which a tracheal bronchus was incidentally found after induction of general anesthesia, and we discuss the potential airway management problems that may have ensued. An 80-year-old man was scheduled for buccal mucosa resection and abdominal skin grafting for treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the left buccal mucosa. Because of trismus and anticipate...
