Greater need but reduced access: a population study of planned and elective surgery rates in adult mental health service users
CONCLUSIONS: Higher rates of surgery in MH service users may reflect a higher prevalence of conditions requiring surgical care, including cardiac, metabolic, alcohol-related or smoking-related conditions. The striking increase in emergency surgery rates suggests that this need may not be being met, particularly for chronic and disabling conditions which are often treated by planned surgery in private hospital settings in the Australian health system. A higher proportion of emergency surgery may have serious personal and health system consequences.PMID:38494985 | DOI:10.1017/S2045796024000131 (Source: Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences)

Duragen: A dermal substitute for the management of suboptimal wounds
Trop Doct. 2024 Mar 18:494755241239090. doi: 10.1177/00494755241239090. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUsing a flap in a large wound with a very small area of exposed vital structures may be an excessive intrusion and cause unnecessary donor site morbidity. Dermal matrix (DuraGen) was applied onto critical areas where bone or tendons were exposed and a split skin graft was placed thereon. All patients had satisfactory wound closure without the need for a flap. DuraGen appears to be a safe, single-stage alternative, to a flap for the healing of complex wounds.PMID:38497140 | DOI:10.1177/00494755241239090 (Source: Tropical Doctor)

Hepatomegaly in a patient with a history of acute myeloid leukemia
In February 2018, a 30-year-old man was referred to the outpatient clinic for recent hepatomegaly. He had a history of acute myeloid leukemia in 2009, treated with cytarabine and doxorubicin, followed a few months later by allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The conditioning regimen included cyclophosphamide and busulfan. The post-transplant course was uneventful. In 2010, the patient developed graft-versus-host disease of the skin and liver, which was rapidly responsive to corticosteroids and cyclosporine. (Source: Journal of Hepatology)

Periorbital necrotizing sweet syndrome: A report of two cases mimicking necrotizing soft tissue infections
CONCLUSION: nSS is rare and a high level of clinical suspicion as well as an understanding of its distinguishing features is necessary to avoid undue morbidity. Identification of pathergy, histopathology, microbiology, and clinical context are critical to avoid misdiagnosis of infection.PMID:38487334 | PMC:PMC10937104 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajoc.2024.102033 (Source: Herpes)

The Detailed Anatomy of the Deep Plane of the Face and Neck with Current Nomenclature
Facial Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/a-2268-6735The fundamental goal of modern face and neck lifting is to enhance and restore a more youthful facial appearance by addressing soft tissue descent. There are variations in described facelift technique including superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) flaps, composite flaps, deep plane, skin flaps, and subperiosteal facelifts, among others. The term “deep plane rhytidectomy” was originally described by Hamra. This term has since been linked with facelift surgery with recent advances including incision placement, treatments of SMAS–platysma complex, and mastoid crevasse am...

Wound healing outcomes following treatment with synthetic hybrid-scale fiber matrix after resection of soft tissue tumors or infections
CONCLUSION: The current case series demonstrated that the SHSFM can support granulation tissue formation over exposed structures as a bridge to skin graft or can completely reepithelialize large wounds without skin grafting. The SHSFM offers a novel treatment option for post-resection surgical wounds.PMID:38479428 (Source: Wounds)
