Length of hospital stay in involuntary admissions in Greece: a 10-year retrospective observational study
ConclusionWhile some of our findings were in line with recent findings from other countries, others could not be replicated. It seems that multiple factors influence LoS and the identification of these factors could help clinicians and policy makers to design more targeted and cost-effective interventions. The optimization of LoS in involuntary admissions could improve patients ’ outcomes and lead to more efficient use of resources. (Source: Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology)

Suicide attempts in schizophrenia - A large retrospective cohort study from a tertiary care psychiatry centre in India
This study aimed to identify the rates and associated correlates of SA in schizophrenia by reviewing a large cohort (n=500). Nearly one-fourth had a history of SA, which was independently associated with a family history of SA, more inpatient admissions, and better long-term treatment response. These findings highlight the complex interaction between biological factors influencing SA and illness determinants in schizophrenia. Furthermore, they reinforce the need for future research to unravel the association between suicide vulnerability and the pathophysiology of schizophrenia to attenuate morbidity and mortality associat...

Integrating Clinical Neuropsychology and Psychotic Spectrum Disorders: A Systematic Analysis of Cognitive Dynamics, Interventions, and Underlying Mechanisms
Conclusions: The systematic review underscores the importance of investigating the neuropsychological components of psychotic spectrum disorders. It identifies significant cognitive impairments in attention, memory, and executive function, correlating with structural and functional brain abnormalities. The paper stresses the need for precise diagnoses and personalized treatment modalities, highlighting the complex interplay between genetic, environmental, and psychosocial factors. It calls for a deeper understanding of these neuropsychological processes to enhance diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic outcomes.PMID:38674291 ...

A review on side effect management of second generation antipsychotics to treat schizophrenia: a drug safety perspective
Expert Opin Drug Saf. 2024 Apr 27. doi: 10.1080/14740338.2024.2348561. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Effective side effects management present a challenge in antipsychotic treatment with second generation antipsychotics (SGAs). In recent years, most of the commonly used SGAs, except for clozapine, have been shown to differ only slightly in their effectiveness, but considerably regarding perceived side effects, safety profiles, and compatibility to preexisting medical conditions.AREAS COVERED: The current state of available evidence on side effect management in SGA treatment of patients with schizophrenia spec...

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2787: Facile Synthesis of Fe-Doped, Algae Residue-Derived Carbon Aerogels for Electrochemical Dopamine Biosensors
In this study, we synthesized nanocomposite carbon aerogels (CAs) doped with iron and iron carbide, based on algae residue-derived biomass materials, using Fe(NO3)3 as the iron source. The modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for DA detection, denoted as CAs-Fe/GCE, was prepared through surface modification with this composite material. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction characterization confirmed the successful doping of iron into the as-prepared CAs. Additionally, the electrochemical behavior of DA on the modified electrode surface was investigated and the results demonstrate that the addition of th...

Differences in the neural correlates of schizophrenia with positive and negative formal thought disorder in patients with schizophrenia in the ENIGMA dataset
Mol Psychiatry. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.1038/s41380-024-02563-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFormal thought disorder (FTD) is a clinical key factor in schizophrenia, but the neurobiological underpinnings remain unclear. In particular, the relationship between FTD symptom dimensions and patterns of regional brain volume loss in schizophrenia remains to be established in large cohorts. Even less is known about the cellular basis of FTD. Our study addresses these major obstacles by enrolling a large multi-site cohort acquired by the ENIGMA Schizophrenia Working Group (752 schizophrenia patients and 1256 controls), to unravel t...

Signature of altered retinal microstructures and electrophysiology in schizophrenia spectrum disorders is associated with disease severity and polygenic risk
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and electroretinography (ERG) studies have revealed structural and functional retinal alterations in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). However, it remains unclear which specific retinal layers are affected, how the retina, brain, and clinical symptomatology are connected, and how alterations of the visual system are related to genetic disease risk.
