Inhibition of voltage-gated potassium channel by aripiprazole in rabbit coronary arterial smooth muscle cells
In this study, we evaluated the effect of aripiprazole on voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels in rabbit coronary arterial smooth muscle cells using the patch clamp technique. Aripiprazole reduced the Kv current in a concentration-dependent manner with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 0.89 ± 0.20 μM and a Hill coefficient of 1.30 ± 0.25. The inhibitory effect of aripiprazole on Kv channels was voltage-dependent, and an additional aripiprazole-induced decrease in the Kv current was observed in the voltage range of full channel activation. The decay rate of Kv channel inactivation was accelerated by aripiprazol...

Using Linkage-enhancement Strategies to Bridge Treatment Gap among Inmates and Former Inmates in Correctional Settings with Inadequate Mental Health Care
J Health Care Poor Underserved. 2024;35(1):116-131.ABSTRACTService linkage and skill enhancement strategies were devised in Nigerian prisons with inadequate mental health resources to support the provision of psycho-legal services, including the assessments, identification, and care of inmates and former inmates with mental illness. Over the study period, 74 individuals, consisting of 64 (86.5%) males with a mean age of 33.25 (SD=11.2) years received care or psycho-legal services through these strategies. Clinically, 49% of the participants were diagnosed with schizophrenia (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth ...

HIV Viral Suppression Among Psychiatric Inpatients with Schizophrenia in San Francisco: A Retrospective Cohort Study
J Health Care Poor Underserved. 2024;35(1):1-7.ABSTRACTPeople with schizophrenia are at increased risk for contracting HIV and face higher mortality rates compared with the general population. Viral suppression is key to HIV care, yet little is known about this metric among people with HIV and schizophrenia. A chart review was conducted among people with HIV/AIDS and schizophrenia living in San Francisco who had received inpatient mental health services between 2010 and 2016. Demographic, laboratory, medication, encounter, and discharge data were collected, and were compared with all people living with HIV in San Francisco...

The Risk and The Course of Cancer Among People with Severe Mental Illness
Clin Pract Epidemiol Ment Health. 2023 Dec 3;19(Suppl-1):e174501792301032. doi: 10.2174/17450179-v17-e211208-2021-HT2-1910-8. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe paucity of data regarding patients with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) and cancer is alarming given the fact that people with SMI, especially schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and severe depressive disorders, have in general poorer access to physical health care and higher morbidity and mortality because of physical illnesses. The aims of this review were to examine the current evidence from existing literature on the risk of developing cancer and its course among people wi...

Whole-exome sequencing in a Chinese sample provides preliminary evidence for the link between rare/low-frequency immune-related variants and early-onset schizophrenia
We examined the association of rare or low-frequency deleterious coding variants in Chinese patients with SCZ. We collected DNA samples in 197 patients with SCZ spectrum disorder and 82 healthy controls (HC), and performed exome sequencing. The AAO variable was ascertained in the majority of SCZ participants for identify the early-onset (EOS, AAO<=18) and adult-onset (AOS, AAO>18) subgroups. We examined the overall association of rare/low-frequency, damaging variants in SCZ versus HC, EOS versus HC, and AOS versus HC at the gene and gene-set levels using Sequence Kernel Association Test. The quantitative rare-variant...

Altered patterns of dynamic functional connectivity of brain networks in deficit and non-deficit schizophrenia
This study aims to investigate the altered patterns of dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) between deficit schizophrenia (DS) and non-deficit schizophrenia (NDS), and further explore the associations with cognitive impairments. 70 DS, 91 NDS, and 120 matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. The independent component analysis was used to segment the whole brain. The fMRI brain atlas was used to identify functional networks, and the dynamic functional connectivity (FC) of each network was detected. Correlation analysis was used to explore the associations between altered dFNC and cognitive functions. Four dyn...

ProteoMutaMetrics: machine learning approaches for solute carrier family 6 mutation pathogenicity prediction
RSC Adv. 2024 Apr 22;14(19):13083-13094. doi: 10.1039/d4ra00748d. eCollection 2024 Apr 22.ABSTRACTThe solute carrier transporter family 6 (SLC6) is of key interest for their critical role in the transport of small amino acids or amino acid-like molecules. Their dysfunction is strongly associated with human diseases such as including schizophrenia, depression, and Parkinson's disease. Linking single point mutations to disease may support insights into the structure-function relationship of these transporters. This work aimed to develop a computational model for predicting the potential pathogenic effect of single point muta...

Lifetime prevalence, comorbidities, and Sociodemographic predictors of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): the National Epidemiology of Iranian Children and adolescents Psychiatric disorders (IRCAP)
Conclusion: Our results in the prevalence, comorbidities, and sociodemographic factors associated with PTSD supported findings of previous studies that used a structured diagnostic interview. It is recommended to use purposive sampling and to investigate comorbidities of PTSD and type of traumatic events in a large clinical population. (Source: European Child and Adolescent Psychiatry)
